Definition

Ratliff never gives a straightforward definition of what repetition is however he gives the main and general point to it. Repetition is an event that occurs to where one can go and express out a next stage, weather it be music or life in general. It allows us to be open and expressing to the world while at the same time being able to do what is familiar.

While Repetition can be a good thing there can also be bad repetition. This is where you just allow yourself to mindlessly continue and to never change to positive. Worrying what a change can help you accomplish. This is seen a lot in the music world where going with a same beat continuously can be annoying. Ratliff uses the image of a car alarm to showcase this. But if we continue to show similarity while adding in differences can really spice up music and life.

Do I agree?

Oh yes, I agree with what Ratliff is saying. Music shouldn't just keep to one certain beat it should expand and grow. Take this into thought if one were to listen to let say "Closer" by the Chainsmokers over and over again, never to change the song, they'd be rather annoyed by it, I know I would. I see that happen when radio stations play the same 4 songs over and over, really it's thanks to them that I don't like modern music and often look to music from the past.

Ratliff Example

For the example I chose "Sing, Sing, Sing (Part 1 and 2)" by Benny Goodman. Fantastic piece of music. A loud intro that brings out a classic chorus of partying and dancing to thought. But what is so great about it is that after the chorus plays there is a different solo that follows it with the sound of drums playing in the back. The drum begins to play louder and louder until the chorus reenters the scene. It gives us something new to look at while at the same time reminding us what the chorus is thus giving us a sense of familiarity.

My Example

For my example I chose "Fluorescent Adolescent" by Arctic Monkeys. The introduction gives off a common beat that is shown thought the song. A pattern can be seen where the singer goes to sing rapidly and then playing slowly leading up to the chorus. The theme is always given two fast beats that signals the next turn. Overall a good song that gives familiarity through the whole song.
