The Multicultural Independence Day event has been organised many years by Moniheli, but we would like to pass the torch to our network. Would there be organisations interested in taking the lead to cooperate with co-funder Citizen's Forum to organise the event this year? The Citizen's Forum is providing 1500 euros of funding already and we have agreed to open the call for performances also to their member associations. But the performances should be selected for a balanced programme, and then the event should be organised in practice. Moniheli supports the event with some funding and with communication. Leave your contact information in the comments if you are interested, we will contact all interested associations at once a little later this month to tell more about what has been already agreed and what is expected.

KULTTUURIKARUSELLI -TAPAHTUMAT / CULTURAL CAROUSEL EVENTS

Hello everyone, let us introduce ourselves! Our nonprofit association (Voimauttavan taiteen äärellä ry) runs a cultural centre KULTTUURIMYLLY in East Helsinki (downstairs of Liikuntamylly, next to Myllypuro metro station) We have been planning event series with the working title of Kulttuurikaruselli* (Cultural carousel) The idea goes something like this: Once a month (for example, depending on the interests, how many events would be hosted in a year etc) there would be organized a CULTURAL CAROUSEL cultural nights. Each night of the program would be hosted in collaboration with one (each time different) Moniheli -multicultural association, giving each one the chance to step into the ”limelight” of the Kulttuurimylly event stage to present your culture in the way you would like to. It could be a concert, a film screening, a dance performance, open mic or something else, what ever you think that would be the best for your association. The event would have two goals: 1. Provide a cultural space for the Moniheli association to get the people of their own cultural community together, meet up, celebrate and present their culture in the best light possible, to both them selves and to the others interested to learn more about it. 2. Second goal of the event serie would be to give an interesting, safe platform from where the locals and finns could more easily find you and come to learn more about your cultural richness etc. The role of the event serie would serve as host and a platform for the people of all ages and all different cultural bakcgrounds to come together and ”dive into” one cultural theme at a time. During the year the ”carousel” event would get to present a series of cultural events of different origins and languages. (The event could include a food culture of each association, presenting not only the music and dance of the each culture but also the traditional culinary of each - and give a chance for people to taste it, one tradition at a time. That could also serve as a platform for fundraising for the associations to have ”pop up” cafe/restaurant activity merged with the event) The role of Kulttuurimylly would be to be a ”base station” for the meetings, to co-host each event with the chosen Moniheli-association. Kulttuurimylly would provide a local space, necessary event technique (stage, light, sound system for concerts etc.) technician to set up and run the light, video, sound technique, the space for people to gatherand a help to promote the event. How ever, we would like to give the freedom of planning/booking/organizing/producing each event to the chosen association, since you are the experts of your associations own cultural richness. If needed we gladly help in anyway we can, but the active role of creating the event would be on a chosen association. We warmly welcome you on Kulttuurimylly, lets create together a wonderful ”Carousel” serie of events to present the wonderful cultural diversity, that we have here inside Moniheli -partner associations.

Satuhetki selkosuomeksi is a project that aims to increase diversity and representation of different communities while supporting their Finnish language learning process through collecting traditional stories and translating them into easy Finnish language (selkokieli). We work with other associations, community groups, libraries, daycares, culture centres and festivals.

In 2023-24 we are looking at ways to build community through the project. This week we piloted a new format for collecting stories with Sillat ry’s Pidä huolta itsestäsi äiti group and we would like to develop this format with new groups:

Session 1: We meet your community, discuss how selkokieli and selkokirja (easy Finnish books) can help the whole family’s experience in Finland. We bring book examples for participants to browse and give them more information about where to find selkokirja. One of our storytellers performs a story to the group and then we discuss sharing their own stories.

Session 2: After stories shared by the groups are translated, we meet again to perform the stories, reflect on the process and ask where the community would like the stories to be disseminated to (e.g daycares, local libraries). This session can be informal and celebratory and participants are welcome to also perform the stories in their mother tongues and to perform music, share food, etc.

The information sessions can be in Finnish or English (or both, or we can work together to offer other bilingual ways of sharing the information) and the stories will all be in easy Finnish checked by Selkokeskus and awarded a selkotunnus.

Who: any associations that work with families or with S2 parents, who might benefit from learning more about selkokieli/selkokirja and who would enjoy sharing and hearing their stories for the project.

We can come to one of your regular group meetings (which we did with the äiti group this week) or ideally, if we could find several partners in similar geographical areas or with common interests that would like to meet up, we could organise each session for 2-3 different groups in a mutual place.

Contact: Carly Markkanen (in English or Finnish) Selkokulttuuri ry: carly@selkokulttuuri.fi

Hello everyone, Autokton ry is interested to organize different activities in Espoo, Vantaa, and Helsinki to raise awareness of immigrants about the importance of regular health check-up and their benefits. Since the number of diseases is increasing and people usually tend to neglect their health until they see the symptoms, we aim to change that mentality and provide materials first to our target group (Albanian-speaking immigrants) and in English to the wider audience and also together with our volunteers and possible partners that will join our initiative through the network initiative of Moniheli. We are planning to do some health measurements for free (BMI, Blood sugar, Hemoglobin, cholesterol, blood pressure) and explain to participants how to interpret the results and the importance of owning their health.
Come and let's create together meaningful events that save people's lives.
Contact information: alba.vrapi@gmail.com
Phone number: 0466688694
