  • Information processing theory is a cognitive psychology theory that looks at mental processes involved in acquiring, storing, and using knowledge.
  •  Focuses on the flow of information as it is passed from one stage to another inside a person’s brain.

    2. Parallel Processing Theory:
    -states that multiple pieces of information can be processed simultaneously instead of in sequential order. 

    3. Hierarchical Processing Theory:
    -different levels of complexity exist within the cognitive processes, with higher-level tasks requiring more complex mental capacities than lower-level tasks.
    -used to explain cognitive concepts such as, problem-solving, and decision-making.

    1. Driving: driving triggers our awareness and makes us respond and react to all the information surrounding us. When we drive we are using information processing.

    2. Learning a Language: we put new words in short-term memory banks before transferring them into long-term memory through rehearsal and repetition. This process involves both serial and parallel processing.

    3. Problem-Solving: Problem-solving generally involves hierarchical processing,  due to its complexity, problems force us to think critically about the information given in a certain order, prioritizing the larger problems with the most mental effort, and requiring less mental capacity the smaller problems.

    4. Transformation: involves transforming information into a more useful form, such as organizing it in different ways or using reasoning and problem-solving skills to come up with a solution.

  • The theory ignores emotion and creativity: relies too frequently on the concept of how our brains work as a computer processing information as we go. Does not allow for ample time to develop creativity.
