This route was first used during the Han Dynasty in China. Frankincense,gold,silk,spices were originated from different countries along the route. By the 7th century, people acquired the resources and expertise to build better and stronger ships. Maritime routes became more popular with traders and soon became the main method of transporting goods to other countries. Most of the traders who used the maritime  trade routes were from the Middle East to distant lands such as Southeast Asia and china. The rulers of China at that time had banned  their people from travelling outside the empire for fear of foreign influence,and that limited trade.The people had been trading with one another even before the arrival of Chinese and Indian traders. They exchanged spices such as cinnamon,cardomon and cloves. In the late 10th century,the Song court in China realised that maritime trade bought in wealth, and removed the ban against private ships going aboard for trade.

There was trading ongoing in the 14th century between Singapore and China, since the blue and white porcelain were originated from China. Traders can come to Singapore trade, mostly during June to September, when the southwest monsoons transported traders from countries west of the India Ocean to Singapore.
