While it's powerful for white people to listen to other white people talk about white privilege and white supremacy, it would be racist to not include and make much space for people of color's voices as well in this work. Each white person responds to call outs or call ins in different ways. Therefore, it is important to use both "nice white lady call ins" and blistering condemnations of white supremacy by folks of color to disrupt white silence and complicity. This is probably one of the most important media pieces a white person has produced with anti-racist education intention. This project encompasses small interviews with everyday white folks in Buffalo and Dallas about race, whiteness, and people of color that reveal the spectrum of toxic and healthy white identities. For many white high school youth, they will be able to see and hear their friends and family in this project, which is a great opportunity for critical self-reflection.

When this song came out early in 2016, it literally broke the social justice internet. You couldn't go on Facebook or Twitter without one of your woke friends talking about this piece of art. Despite the valid critiques of it, this is an important song for all youth to hear, especially if most of your classroom listens to Hip Hop. What I love most about this piece is the way that Macklemore vulnerably walks us through his thought process and realization of how white America views him compared to other rappers. My cooperating teacher taught this novel when I was student teaching this fall and I was blown away by its relevance, wittiness, and complex characters. The Hate U Give follows the changes in 16-year-old Starr's life after she witnesses the police murder her best friend. While my students were predominantly Black and Brown, I am interested in how a predominantly white classroom will interpret this novel.
