         <description><![CDATA[<div>Landowners feared that italy would be taken over by communist revolutionaries. The people of Italy feared that their land and wealth would be taken from them<br><br>the rising inflation and unemployment caused strikes and riots in the cities and countryside. Italian governments were unable to solve the problems of the country and changed often between 1918 and 1922<br><br>italy suffered a great deal during world war 1. over half a million soldiers were killed and a million were wounded. at the end of the war italy failed to get land and that was promised to the country. many italians felt bitter because they believed italian pride had been hurt&nbsp;<br><br>members of the fascist party&nbsp; or blackshirts were organised into groups or squads that attacked socialist meetings and demonstrations </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1: Mussolini came to power by forming the Fascist Party in 1919. Italy was in a state of unrest and the Fascist Party began gaining support on a national level.</div><div><br></div><div>2: In October of 1922, out of a fear of a communist takeover due to riots and strikes in Northern Italy, Mussolini gathered his Fascist followers and party foot soldiers, nicknamed the 'Black Shirts' and staged a march on Rome.</div><div><br></div><div>3:&nbsp; Mussolini gradually dismantled the institutions of democratic government and in 1925 made himself dictator.</div><div><br></div><div>4: Italy seemed to be slipping into political chaos. The Black Shirts marched on Rome and Mussolini presented himself as the only man capable of restoring order. King Victor Emmanuel invited Mussolini to form a government.</div><div><br></div><div>5: Fascist Italy under Mussolini was a heavily centralized and state-controlled country. Early in Mussolini's tenure as Il Duce, he used the immense powers of the fascist state to marginally improve Italy - social welfare programs to help the unemployed were instituted, railroads and public transportation systems were built or improved upon, and the Italian economy stabilized.</div>]]></description>
