The transition of Jem and Scout was from innocent children, when they assumed all people where good, to a more adult perspective where they encountered evil. The book shows through Jem and Scout's experience that Maycomb's citizens are both good and bad. This also helps their perspective of other people grow. When Atticus helped Tom Robison in the court case, Jem and Scout began to hear racist things and saw how evil some people can be.

Following Good Vs. Evil, one of the biggest theme in the book is about perspective, or looking at something in someone elses point of view. Jem and Scout learn to see things from the perspective of others, and learn to understand what characters like Boo Radley, Mrs. Dubose, and others go through. Jem and scout saw how truly bad some people were and how they themselves had treated people and how they acted against Boo Radley. Jem and Scout hated Mrs. Dubose for being so racist, but when they learned about her morphine addiction and why she wanted them to read to her, they began to feel sorry for her.

Social Inequality

In To Kill A Mockingbird, racism and inequality are another of the two main themes. Many types of social inequalities exist in the book, the first being the discrimination between rich and poor, and why they do not interact with eachother. There is major racism against blacks by all people in Maycomb, and they are denied human rights and discriminated against in the town. Tom Robinson was sent to prison because of false accusations and being black, because he said he felt sorry for a white woman, so he did not win the case. Lastly, men and woman where also unequal. Woman where not considered equal to men. Woman had to act ladylike, this was evident by the treatment of Aunt Alexandra.
