- I am Maha Al- Barghouthi, a retired Paralympic athlete. I won three Paralympic medals
in para table tennis. I was voted Jordan’s top sportsperson in 2002.
- What do you mean by Paralympic?
- It is an international sports competition for people with physical disabilities, that happens
every four years immediately after the Olympics.
- How did you start your sporting career?
- I started in 1985 for eleven years in track athletics where I earned a world record in the
200 meters. Then, I switched to wheelchair table tennis in 1996.
- Why did you switch to wheelchair table tennis?
- Because I love it more and it is more competitive.
- When did you attend your first Paralympic game?
- I attended my first Paralympic Games in 2000 where I won my country’s first ever gold
medal in table tennis.
- Who supported you through your sport career?
- My parents supported me all the way. I urge parents with disabled children to do so.
- What is your message to the world?
- People with disability always have a message to their families, community and
governments: “Allow us to participate and be productive citizens with rights and
responsibilities”.

Dmitri Mendeleev was the youngest of at least 14 children in his family. His father was a teacher at the local gymnasium, and his mother came from a family that introduced glass and paper making to Siberia. From a very young age, Dimitri
showed a high interest in physics and mathematics. Also, he was taught many things about glass and glass blowing from the family factory.
When Mendeleev was 13, he lost his father. This sad event affected the family, but Mendeleve's mother kept supporting the family. She also noticed his gifted abilities in science and wanted to help him get a good education. So, she took him to St. Petersburg, where he enrolled in the Main Pedagogical Institute. Few months later, he lost his mom and sister.
Mendeleev had a great interest in the elements. His most significant accomplishments were his discovery of periodic law and the making of the periodic table. Scientists continue to adjust the periodic table as new elements are found. Mendeleev’s mission, to clarify chemistry, lives on. He dedicated his textbook to his mother who always supported and encouraged him while she was alive.

The Jordanian Paralympic Committee, in honor of its Secretary-General, Paralympic champion Maha Al-Barghouti, organized, on Thursday, the Prince Raad Bin Zaid Complex for Disabled Sports, a simplified and brief ceremony in commitment to public safety measures in the face of the emerging Corona virus.

On the occasion of Barghouti’s achievement of the honor of obtaining an international award given by the Women’s Committee in the International Paralympic Committee to inspiring, accomplished and influential leaderships in the world of women in general and the sport of the disabled in particular.
The Jordanian Paralympic Committee nominated Barghouti to be the first Jordanian and Arab to receive this award.
The celebration took place in conjunction with the World Day of the Disabled, under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Sari Hamdan, Deputy Chairman of the Jordanian Olympic Committee, and the presence of Prof. Dr. Hussein Abu Al-Raz, Chairman of the Jordanian Paralympic Committee, and the family of the Committee.
Al-Barghouti was scheduled to receive its global award during the Paralympic Tokyo 2020 events, but the postponement of these games due to the Corona virus prompted the International Paralympic Committee to assign the Jordanian Paralympic Committee to hand Barghouti its prize in Amman.
The celebration began with a speech by the President of the Jordanian Paralympic Committee, in which he congratulated the new achievement of the Paralympic duck, reviewing the most prominent future achievements and ambitions, stressing that Barghouti deserves this honor that crowns her golden sports career.
