However i think the currenting sentencing system fulfills the purpose of punishing and denunciation (and possibly retribution?) however fails to successfully fulfill the purpose of deterrence and rehabilitation, which can be evidenced by high re-offending rates.

For example, if a person has been convicted for drug abuse we should arrange means for them to get the help required rather than judge them or publicly shame them for their wrong doings. It may seem that publicly exposing them can act as a type of deterrence but it not only causes damage to their self - esteem it also creates lesser opportunity for them to build themselves back up in the society again.
