Collaboration and Mutual Respect

I chose this image to reflect the importance of respect of other cultures and lifestyles and how it influences collaboration. Group problem solving depends on collaboration and mutual respect. Each individual brings their own culture and expectations to the group. It is important that each member of the team is aware of his own beliefs and how they influence his behavior. We need to study culture and how it influences the ideas and perspectives of our families and support team. What is offensive to one person is acceptable to another. Each of the participants brings their own style, depth of expertise and trust and that affects the process of collaboration and outcome for the child.

Collaborative Problem Solving: Brainstorming

I chose this image because it reflects the importance of all people in the team at a round table of equals. Brainstorming is easier if all members of the team know each other well and value the knowledge and ideas of each other. The rules of brainstorming include accepting the ideas of others without criticizing or evaluating them. When we do not stop to evaluate ideas it can lead to chains of similar ideas that can lead to the best possible solution to the problem. Propose all ideas regardless of practicality. You never know what resources other people have on the team. If nothing else it could be good for a laugh! Make sure someone is writing the ideas down. When the ideas are flowing you do not want any of them to be lost.

Select and implement the solution selected by the team

I used the picture of a football diagram to reflect that each member is important and should have a role in the intervention. A solution should be selected based on the ability of the team to implement the intervention to meet the mutual goal. The team should also consider if the intervention is intrusive to the program and if the means outweigh the goal. The individuality of the group should also be reflected in the solution. We should create a way to help the child achieve the goal that involves specific steps and duties should be assigned to specific members of the team. A time and place should be planned to reflect on the success of the intervention and if the goal needs to be re-framed or a new intervention established.

Experimental Teaching

I chose a picture of a child scientist doing experiments to reflect experimental teaching. Advocates of No Child Left Behind would like Tier 1 education to have more teachers adapt their teaching techniques to the individual needs of their students. It is considered experimental teaching since the teachers a technique and if they are not successful they try something else. They use a system of trial and error like a scientist doing an experiment. Currently most teachers try one way to teach and children must adapt instead of the the teachers changing to meet the needs of the children.

Blur Education

I chose a blurry picture of the word education since it is the goal of No Child Left Behind to blur together regular and special education. They have stated "general education is expandable and special education is expendable." They believe special education is hurtful to children. When children are labeled there is a drop in the expectations for the individual child. They would like to solve the problem and not label the child. This would also blur the resources for regular and special education. They would like all children to have access to special education money and free up the school psychologists for consultation instead of labeling.
