My org strives to be inclusive for all volunteers, but we struggle in giving them work that is both engaging for the volunteer and helps drive our mission and goals as a group.

My program is ethnically focused and I have yet to encounter this intersectionality in my work. It may also be something that I am just not aware of yet with the current students that I work with. This network will be invaluable when the time comes for me to navigate this potential reality! Of course, I am also happy to be able to support my organization as a whole.

I've been thinking about how neurodiversity has been largely a way to discuss ASD, but I think it includes other types of differences like dyslexia and Tourette's Syndrome, etc. What does it mean for these folks if we only talk about neurodiversity for ASD?

One thing that I have been aware of is the need to educate and set expectations for all audience members in addition to staff, etc. because often a welcoming an inclusive environment is determined by the person seated next to you.

Middle school example got me thinking... I saw this a lot when working in HS. 1:1 aides and teachers fall into a rhythm where even if at the beginning of the year they are excitedly working toward an inclusive classroom environment, after a while they fall into rhythms that no longer effectively include students. So important to have check ins and continually remind and push aides/instructors to advocate for their neurodiverse students/participants.

One of the ephemeral struggles we have at the science center is how to build a truly inclusive space while also creating efficient and effective decision-making processes. To us, a big part of inclusion means bringing diverse backgrounds in to inform the experience and be part of our strategic and tactical decision-making, and it can be tough to build a group large enough to be inclusive but small enough so that we can make decisions and keep moving forward. There are systems we use to find the balance here, but it's still a challenge for us.
