War is a huge issue in Afghanistan. Since the start of the Afghanistan War in 2001, over 21,000 civilians have been killed. Some causes of death are crossfire, cluster bombs, assassination, and even night raids into the house of suspected agitators. The toll of the ongoing war in Afghanistan has been very high. In 2009, the Afghan Ministry of Public Health said fully two-thirds of Afghans suffer mental health problems. The war has also caused many indirect deaths, from problems such as malnutrition, lack of clean drinking water, and reduced access to healthcare. While Afghanistan was already dealing with these issues even before the war, the war has only made issues have only been made exponentially worse. When the war ends, it will be generations before Afghanistan can recover from the war. It was started in 2001, and still has no end in sight. It’s likely that the future generations will suffer greatly from the war going on right now.

War also used to be a big issue in Laos, and the aftermath can still be seen today. From between 1964 to 1973, the United States dropped over 2,000,000 tons of ammunition during 580,000 bombing missions. This is equivalent to a planeload of bombs every 8 minutes, for 9 years straight. It was part of a secret war in Laos, where the United States supported the Royal Lao Government against the Pathet Lao (Communists). Due to the destruction of thousands of villages, hundreds of thousands of civilians were displaced. Around of a third of the bombs did not even explode, making the whole of Laos a giant minefield essentially. Over 20,000 people have been killed due to the unexploded ordnance (UXO). Each year, there are over 100 new casualties, 60% which lead to death, and 40% of the victims are children. The United States has done little to help. It spent the same amount of money bombing Laos for 3 days ($51,000,000) as it has spent cleaning up the mess it made for 16 years.
