"This propels me to think whether there are some other elements, other than language, that obstruct me from being a part of the mainstream classroom. The feeling of being an “outsider” in my mainstream classrooms prompts me to think about and hopefully advocate for changes that will better serve ELL students. "
******
This is a quote from my positionality literature review, through a closer look at the literature centered around ELL's obstacles under current educational environment, it is clear that there are many other obstacles rather than language that contribute to the difficulties they are facing. I, my self, as a bilingual students who have gone through the process of navigating in the mainstream classroom, am well positioned to advocate for this issue and suggest for future inclusive classrooms for ELL students.

"I am an appropriate candidate to research and advocate for this issue, because my personal experience of this problem make me passionate in bridging the gaps and provide the ESL students the appropriate support that are especially relevant to their social and emotional wellbeing. As a bilingual student, my presence can be a less alarming and be a more approachable figure for the ESL students. In addition, my experience and history can allow me to see problems that are overlooked by teachers. "
******
I am more self-aware that my histories, bias, values, desires all situated me well to dig deeper int the ELL students's obstacles and advocate for more classroom inclusivity. My fluency in Chinese and actual experience as a bilingual student would allow me to be a more approachable researcher and form relationship with students and different stakeholders.
Now, looking forward, with all the related course work, capstone experience, and real life volunteer experience at Sejong Academy charter school, I was better able to situate myself in a local school that is radically different from my past schooling experience and think about how I can connect to different stakeholders by my active presence in the classroom and communicate with teachers and principles about what I can do to help all ELL students for building inclusive classroom.

"Even though now my thinking is assimilated under western education system, such as doing psychological research using quantitative data tools to reach generalized conclusions, I still feel attached to my heritage culture. I want to use my experience to better understand the in-betweenness of ESL students' identities under U.S. context."
******

This is a quote from my Community Networks photo series, my past experience living in China for 16 years, 2 years living in Costa Rica, and studying in Macalester for almost 4 years have shaped my positionality and my view for the world. Because of my past experience moving from one country to the other, and learning new languages and new cultures, I feel attached to ESL students thriving under the U.S. educational system. As a future researcher, I want to develop deeper understanding of their experience through researches and advocate for their rights.
