Orbis Pictus Award Criteria -

Accuracy -
This book seems to be an ongoing poem about a girl and a frog. It provides accurate details about the frog such as mentioning his "tender toes that stick so well to everything" (page with frog and orange flowers). The illustrations and text also compliments each other very well.

Organization -
The information from the book goes from general to specific. The more that is read, the more information that is found out about the frog and the girl. The text is organized and easy to read.

Style -
Writing: The language used is descriptive. Sometimes, the reader is learning about the frog. Other times, the reading is reading about the environment around the characters.
Illustrations: The illustrations do a wonderful job of demonstrating what the text is emphasizing. For example, when the text talks about the fall, the illustrations contain trees with orange leaves, and no sign of the frog (page with poem titled "Fall").

Age Appropriate -
The book contains fun pictures with a ton of life. They are so detailed and fill the page. This kind of book can keep any audience engaged. The poems tell a story in a way that is uncommon, but still clear. Most poem books have completely different ideas displayed throughout it. The fact that this one has poems that go together makes it all the more interesting.

Contributes to K-8 Curriculum -
This is a great book that would contribute to the K-8 curriculum. It not only introduces poems, but it tells a story for children to relate to, it discusses specifics of frogs, and even elaborates on different seasons (winter, spring, summer, and fall). There are many ways for this book to contribute to the K-8 curriculum.

Orbis Pictus Award Criteria -

Accuracy -
The poems displayed within the book are realistic and accurate. For example, in the poem named "Croak", it talks about a hungry toad looking for something to eat. The sound is accurate based on the animal, and the food listed (slugs and snails) are accurate to the appetite of a toad. Other poems in the book provide similar scenarios with appropriate elements based on the setting/animal/character.

Organization -
The poems tend to go from a specific item to a more general idea. For example, in the poem "Jelly on the Plate", the poem talks about the jelly, then sausage, then a baby on the floor. It went from the table to the stove to the floor. It is clear what item is being talked about and when.

Style -
Writing: The writing uses simple rhyming words that flow easily. Each poem is almost sang as a song due to the simple flow of words.
Illustrations: The illustrations are appropriate to the text. If the poem is about a dog, the illustrations demonstrate that as well. The book is targeting children, so the illustrations are supposed to match the text well.

Age Appropriate -
The text and illustrations in the book are age appropriate. The text is simple and the illustrations are fun, holding the attention of the reader. If the poems were for older children, they would be expected to hold more hidden meaning rather than to be sang like a song. The topics are also things that children would be familiar with, such as animals and food.

Contributes to K-8 Curriculum -
This book provides a great introduction to poetry. Children start to learn that poetry is rhyming and that there are different styles of it. This book displays a ton of different types of poetry. It also does a great job of introducing figurative language. Although it may seem soon to introduce such an idea, they will at least be familiar with it after reading the poems in this book.
