Dear Mr. Henshaw By Beverly Cleary

Dear Mr. Henshaw was the first chapter book I read over and over as a young reader. I loved this book because of the diary format that it was written in. The character, a young boy named Lee, found an outlet to express emotions and feelings while his parents were getting a divorce, through writing his favorite author, Mr. Henshaw, letters. Eventually, Mr. Henshaw suggested that Lee keep his own diary to help express his thoughts.

Harry Potter Series By J.K. Rowling

The Harry Potter series was the first series I read. I remember waiting eagerly for each book to come out. I was 10 years old when the first book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone came out and about 20 years old when the last book came out. Harry Potter took me on amazing adventures and always hoped to get an "OWL" that would tell me I was accepted into Hogwarts.

The Foot Book By Dr. Seuss

I think it's pretty rare for one to remember the first book they were able to read independently, and then know that they read it so often that they memorized it. I remember reading The Foot Book so many times that I memorized the entire thing. This being one of the earliest moments that I can remember loving literacy is very important and special to me. Dr. Seuss continued to be one of my favorite authors. He taught me to have fun with writing and how words rhymed (even if the words were made up).

Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins

Similar to Harry Potter, Hunger games was another series I was obsessed with. I was drawn to Katniss Everdeen, tough, brave, loyal, brilliant, and great shot with the bow. I felt very connected to this character because I feel as though I posses similar qualities (not including a good shot with the bow--which I am, haha). The inspiration also came from the people from the districts that created an uprising against the Capital

This series of books were the first books I helped inspire my first fourth grade students to be excited about literature. I worked in new Berlin as a reading intervention teacher. Working in the classroom for the first time was very exciting and the students loved the mystery and suspense of this series. I used many reading response tasks with the students that helped foster their engagement in reading.

Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond

Probably one for the most inspiring, controversial, and eye-opening texts I've ever read. Working in urban, inner city of Milwaukee, I was having a hard time connecting with the city and situations that (some of) my students live through. This book was given to me by a coworker and my perception of Milwaukee poverty has been forever changed. The author depicts first hand accounts of what living in poverty in Milwaukee is like for some. Matthew Desmond lived in the poorest of areas in Milwaukee to gather fieldwork and data to help show the struggles of living in poverty.
