The effect of setting off one word as its own paragraph in "Ryan and Jimmy and the well in Africa" is an instant realization of shock when Ryan didn't know Africa had fresh water to drink.
An Effect that a one-word paragraph can do is put a person in shock. For example, In paragraph 2 Ryan response's to a world problem is "Water?" This show's the confusion that Ryan had faced. In Africa, he didn't know they didn't have fresh water.
Then, in paragraph 3 says "Ryan thought of his own house in Canada"..."All they had to do was turn on a tap, and came out all the clean water they could possibly want." Meaning that Ryan is comparing the fact how he has all the water he needs, but Africa does not."

The effect of setting off one word as its own paragraph is to establish the character's quick and heavy confusion. To add on, it was said in the first paragraph, "Ryan Hreljac couldn't believe what his first grade teacher was saying" .This supports how Ryan later was met with confusion as he heard about children who had almost no access to clean, fresh water and was surprised because he usually had access to all of the clean water he would ever need. This is evident in paragraph 3, where it states, "Ryan thought about his own house in Canada, which he shared with his parents, two brothers, and a dog named Riley. All they had to was turn on a tap, and out came all the clean water they could possibly want". This justifies why Ryan was so shocked to hear about children having no water while he had a lot.

The effect of "Water?'' stated in paragraph two is showing the reader how surprised Ryan was that people in Africa die from thirst when he thought everyone had just as much water as he did. The text states "Ryan Herljac couldn't believe what his first grade teacher was saying; Every year, thousands and thousands of people, many of them children, got sick and died because they didn't have clean water to drink." Another evidence found in paragraph 1 is, "One of the most serious problems, she explained, was the lack of safe drinking".

In the text, "Ryan and Jimmy and the well in Africa that brought them together," the authors sets one word off as its own paragraph. In paragraph 2 of the text, it states, "water," and only water. This creates a dramatic effect, displaying something either drastic or important. It creates a mood of seriousness. In the text it states, "Every year, thousands and thousands of people, many of them children, got sick and died because they didn't have clean water to drink." This detail, stated in the text before paragraph 2, creates a dramatic effect from the start. Paragraph 2 just amplifies the fact that this part of the text is getting into something serious. By have paragraph 2 state, "water," it creates a sense of importance. It lets the reader know why the mood of the story is very serious or melancholy. Water, the amount of clean water in Africa, is a problem. There isn't much.

In the excerpt, "Ryan and Jimmy and the Well in Africa That Brought Them Together", the effect of setting off one word as its own paragraph is that Ryan was in total shock at what his teacher said. He could not believe that water can cause death in children and that some batches of water were unsafe to drink. The text states, "Every year, thousands and thousands of people, many of them children, got sick and died because they didn't have clean water to drink. Water?" This detail explains that Ryan didn't believe that kids over the years died because they lacked purified water. The text also states, "One of the most serious problems, she explained, was the lack of safe drinking water." This detail explains that purified water was a big issue. In conclusion, this is the effect of setting off one word as its own paragraph.
