Helping Mr Snail

Emma and I were walking home one rainy day when we saw a big snail slugging along. She said excitedly, “I want to move the snail away so that other people won’t step on it!” She has seen me do that a few times and she initiated the movement that day, which I was pleasantly surprised! She said gently while tapping the snail’s shell, “Snail, I’m going to move you away.” However the snail wasn’t afraid and didn’t hide into its shell. She tried to pick it up but it was till firmly stuck to the ground. She verbalised that she was afraid but I encouraged her to persist. She looked around and her eyes lit up, she exclaimed, “I know, let me use a leaf!” She went to pick up a leaf from the nearby grass patch to tickle the snail but the snail still didn’t go back into its shell! So she wanted me to help her as she was scared to detach the snail from its shell. I showed her how I did it with a few tries; the snail was very determined to continue its path. Finally it went in and I allowed Emma to carry the snail shell to the grass patch which it was creeping towards. I asked her, “See, it’s not so scary right?” She nodded her head with a sense of satisfaction on her face.

Encouraging problem solving and perseverance

Thaddeus loves building Lego set since young. Hence this time we set up a challenge for him, building a Lego car set meant for age of 9. He managed to complete it with little guidance, although it took him several sessions to complete one set, but he has learned to communicate letting us know that he is tired from building and would like to stop for the day. He would read the diagrams from the catalogue and ask questions like "Mummy, what is this part for? Which part of the car does it belongs to?"

As he goes along building the car, he was able to tell which would be the front and back of the car. He was very proud of himself with every part added to the car and he will go around showing everyone in the house.

Opening a parcel

One day, my parcel was delivered. Chloe was so excited to open it as she knew it was something meant for her. So this is the first time, I let her try to cut with a scissor (adult scissors although is small). She tried cutting a little at first slowly and asked if she should cut through the package, I nodded and encouraged her to do it. Then she did it confidently and carefully.

Adina’s journey of perseverance

We are writing to share a story about our child - Adina, who demonstrated perseverance and determination while learning to balance on a balance bike.

Adina received a balance bike from a friend not too long ago. Only recently, she has been more consistent in learning how to balance. So, for a few days each week, after dinner, her Papa would invite her to accompany him to the supermarket near our house and encourage her to practice using the balance bike instead of walking or scooting. Initially, she struggled to balance and gave up easily, citing tiredness and pain from falling. Papa would say many times over, “Papa can see how hard you tried to balance, and it’s ok to fall. Let’s try again; I’m here with you.” With lots of encouragement and as time passed, she began to show unwavering focus and determination Every time she fell, she got back up, ready to try again. Her persistence paid off as she gradually found her balance and gained confidence to transition to a bicycle. This journey has been inspiring for us, and we believe it will help her face future challenges with resilience and optimism.
