Dr Beegle's description of how cyclical poverty affected EVERY aspect of life was a new way of thinking for me. That it affects nutrition, exposure to "middle-class norms," exposure to vocabulary and background knowledge, etc

I had never thought about the language used by those raised in poverty. The realization that you can only be taught what others know, including language, habits, mannerisms, etc. She used the term 'aint' as a sign of poverty

Situational poverty vs. generational poverty. I am beginning to see the difference in families that have been in poverty for many years and for many generations vs. a family who is in a difficult situation (such as the one described with the doctor father who passed away).

It is incredible to see poverty through the eyes of someone who has lived it. I have known people who have suffered through homelessness, and or money being tight, but I've never been exposed to all of the details that she shared. I will be more sympathetic going forward.

Loved the quote from Donna Beegle: “I didn’t know I wasn’t speaking middle class language, but I knew my whole life that people couldn’t hear me, because of the way I talked.” This quote stuck out to me, putting it more plainly than I’ve heard before. I keep thinking about how different her perception was shaped by those experiences she had and those she didn't.

I loved how she said that there are reasons behind every behavior that we see. I guess I knew that, but it has really made me stop and think about every interaction I am having with my students now. I am really trying to think about the "why" behind how some of my students respond and behave, rather than assuming I know.

Dr. Beegle's description of how poverty affected her whole life, even when she wasn't in poverty anymore, really stood out to me. For example, she talked about speaking at a fancy business and eating her food before everyone else, not realizing that she was supposed to wait till everyone had been served. This was just a simple example of how growing up in poverty means not being given the understanding needed to succeed in the middle class. This measure for success needs to change.
