Long ago in ancient Greece, there lived a beautiful woman named Medusa. She served as a priestess in the temple of the goddess Athena. Medusa had long, silky hair and was admired by many people for her beauty.

However, Medusa broke her promise of purity by falling in love with Poseidon, the god of the sea. Poseidon and Medusa met in Athena’s temple, which angered the goddess. As punishment, Athena transformed Medusa’s beautiful hair into snakes and cursed her so that anyone who looked directly into her eyes would turn to stone.

Medusa became a Gorgon, a terrifying creature who lived far away in a dark cave, away from human civilization. Many heroes tried to defeat her but failed, as they were turned to stone.

One day, the brave hero Perseus was sent on a mission to slay Medusa. With help from the gods—Hermes gave him winged sandals, Athena gave him a reflective shield—Perseus approached Medusa while she was asleep. He used the shiny shield as a mirror so he would not look at her directly, and with his sword, he cut off her head.

Even after her death, Medusa’s head retained its power to turn people to stone. Perseus later used it as a weapon to defeat his enemies before giving it to Athena, who placed it on her shield as a symbol of protection.

Setting:

Ancient Greece, mainly in Athena’s temple and Medusa’s cave.

Place:

-Athena’s temple (where the curse happened)

-A dark, distant cave (where Medusa lived after being cursed)

Time:

Mythological time (long ago in ancient Greek mythology, not a specific date)

Characters:

-Medusa

-Athena (goddess of wisdom)

-Poseidon (god of the sea)

-Perseus (hero who defeated Medusa)

-Hermes (messenger god who helped Perseus)

Moral Value:

-Actions have consequences: Medusa’s broken vow led to her curse.

-Courage and intelligence can overcome great dangers (Perseus used strategy, not just strength).

-Respect sacred places and promises.

-Even something feared can be used for good (Athena used Medusa’s head to protect)

The Fox and the Crow

In a forest, a crow was sitting on a tree branch, holding a piece of cheese in her beak. A fox saw the cheese and decided to trick the crow into dropping it. The fox complimented the crow’s beautiful voice and asked her to sing for him. The crow, flattered by the praise, opened her beak to sing. As she did, the cheese fell out and the fox quickly grabbed it and ran away. The crow realized that she had been tricked and felt foolish.

The fox thought he had gotten away with his trickery, but he soon learned that karma had caught up with him. He ate the cheese too quickly and got a painful stomachache. He realized that his greed had caused him to suffer, and he felt guilty for what he had done to the crow.

The crow learned a valuable lesson about not trusting flattery and keeping her guard up. She also learned that she shouldn’t let her guard down when she has something valuable, and to be cautious of those who seem too friendly.

The fox also learned a valuable lesson about honesty and not taking advantage of others. He realized that his actions had consequences and that he needed to make amends for what he had done. He apologized to the crow and promised to never trick anyone again.

ANALYZE

A fable is a short fictional story, usually featuring animals, plants, or objects that are given human qualities (like speaking, thinking, or acting). It is written to teach a moral lesson or convey a practical truth about life and human behavior.

The social function of a fable is its role or purpose in society.

SI PITUNG

Si Pitung is a pious young man from Rawa Belong. He diligently studied the Koran from Haji Naipin. After studying the Koran, he was also trained in martial arts. After many years, his ability to master religious knowledge and martial arts has increased.

At that time the Dutch were colonizing Indonesia. Si Pitung feels sorry to see the suffering experienced by the common people. Meanwhile, the kumpeni (the name for the Netherlands), a group of bosses and landlords lived in luxury. Their homes and fields are guarded by fierce thugs.

With the help of his friends, Rais and Jii, Si Pitung starts planning to rob the boss's and rich landlord's houses. The proceeds of his robbery were distributed among the poor. In front of the house of a starving family he put a lump of rice. Families who are entangled in loan shark debt are given compensation. And orphans sent parcels of clothes and other gifts.

The success of Pitung and his friends was due to two things. First, he has high martial arts knowledge and it is rumored that his body is immune to bullets. Second, people don't want to tell where Si Pitung is now. However, the rich victims of the Si Pitung robbery and the Kumpeni always try to persuade people to open their mouths.

The Kumpeni also used violence to force people to give statements. One day, the kumpeni and rich landlords managed to get information about Si Pitung's family. So they took his parents and Haji Naipin hostage. With severe torture they finally got information about where Si Pitung was and the secret of his immunity.

Armed with all this information, Kumpeni police also ambushed Si Pitung. Of course Si Pitung and his friends fought back. But unfortunately, information about Si Pitung's immune secret has been revealed. He was pelted with rotten eggs and shot. He died instantly. Even so, for Jakarta, Si Pitung is still considered a defender of the common people.

ANALYZE

a. Mythology is the collection and study of myths — traditional stories, legends, or narratives that explain the beliefs, values, history, natural phenomena, or customs of a culture.

b. Teaching Morals, Strengthening Cultu, Supporting Social Order

c.

-Character

•Si Pitung – Pious, brave, skilled in martial arts, caring, generous, defender of the poor.

•Rais & Jii – Loyal friends, helpful, brave, support Si Pitung’s mission.

•Haji Naipin – Wise teacher, religious, mentor to Si Pitung.

•Kumpeni (Dutch colonizers) – Cruel, greedy, oppressive, use violence.

•Rich bosses/landlords – Wealthy, selfish, live in luxury, exploit the poor.

•Common people – Poor, oppressed, grateful for Si Pitung’s help, loyal to him.

-Setting

•Place: Rawa Belong (Jakarta area), the houses of bosses and landlords, and the places where poor people live.

•Time: During the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia.

-Moral Value

•Fight against injustice and defend the weak, even if it is risky.

•Use knowledge and skills for the benefit of society.

•Be generous and help those in need.

•Loyalty and solidarity are powerful, but betrayal and greed can lead to downfall.

The princess and the pie

Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess, but she would have to be a real princess. He travelled all over the world to find one, but nowhere could he get what he wanted.

There were princesses enough, but it was difficult to find out whether they were real ones. There was always something about them that was not as it should be.

One evening a terrible storm came on, there was thunder and lightning, and the rain poured down in torrents. Suddenly a knocking was heard at the city gate, and the old king went to open it.

It was a princess standing out there in front of the gate. But, good gracious! what a sight the rain and the wind had made her look. The water ran down from her hair and clothes, it ran down into the toes of her shoes and out again at the heels. And yet she said that she was a real princess.

Well, we'll soon find that out, thought the old queen. But she said nothing, went into the bed-room, took all the bedding off the bedstead, and laid a pea on the bottom, then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty eider-down beds on top of the mattresses.

On this the princess had to lie all night. In the morning she was asked how she had slept.

"Oh, very badly!" said she. "I have scarcely closed my eyes all night. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on something hard, so that I am black and blue all over my body. It's horrible!"

Now they knew that she was a real princess because she had felt the pea right through the twenty mattresses and the twenty eider-down beds.

Nobody but a real princess could be as sensitive as that.

So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a real princess, and the pea was put in the museum, where it may still be seen, if no one has stolen it.

1. The story "The Princess and the Pea" is a classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen and was first published in 1835. This story belongs to the fairy tale genre because it contains elements of fantasy—the princess's ability to feel the pea under the thick mattress—and often contains a moral message.

2. Analyze the characters and their traits: a. The Prince Characteristics: Demanding, idealistic. Characteristics: He is not easily satisfied and has high standards for his future wife. He wants to ensure that the person he marries is a true princess. b. The Princess Characteristics: Sensitive, perceptive. Characteristics: Highly sensitive to discomfort, even able to sense the presence of a pea under a pile of mattresses. This demonstrates her extraordinary sensitivity, symbolizing her as a true princess. c. The Old Queen Characteristics: Intelligent, wise. Characteristics: Thorough and resourceful. She has a unique way of testing the truth of the princess's statements. She doesn't immediately believe them, but tests them tactfully.

3. Moral of the story: A person's true nature is revealed through small tests that may be invisible to others. Don't judge people by their outward appearance, for the princess arrived battered by the storm, but she was still a true princess. Sensitivity and sensitivity can be signs of excellence, even though they are often considered weaknesses.
