This is part of a program I am creating to support a local school’s Intersession break. Students will learn about how birds are specially adapted to meet specific food and environmental conditions. Students will take this new knowledge and conduct a habitat evaluation of a local forest preserve. After they collect their data they will create a community project to share their work with others.

I did the book ends option. Students will have several lessons that involved bird adaptations and how to identify birds found in Washington State. They will need to identify pictures of common birds. A homework assignment will be to go outside their house or to the park and identify birds they see. They will use the audubon.org website, or they can put the app on their phones.

Our field experience is that we will be going to the Nisqually Wildlife refuge to identify birds and other animals/plants that are found there. Students will also be examining mammals and what adaptions they have the suit them for the environment where they live.

Afterwards the students will have a reflection piece where they discuss how their actions and choices affect the animals around them.

The scotch broomis on a hill of which our football field is above and the baseball field is below. We need to determine what will happen if we remove all of the scotch broom and what will we need to replace it with. We have native seedlings on our campus which are possible replacements.
