         <description><![CDATA[<div>Using shared reading allows the teacher to engagethe students in the process of reading. Bothdemonstration and practice in the use of strategiesand skills can be provided. Teaching that rangesfrom an understanding of phonology and wordanalysis to the use of comprehension strategies canbe accomplished using shared reading. Childrendevelop a sense of story and learn to predict notonly the story sequence but also the use oflanguage and the construction of text. By this we mean they observe a goodreader and learn what good readers do when theyread. The children watch how a book is handled. Theysee how the print is accessed. They hear theconversations about strategies that can be used to gaininformation from the text. Finally, they participate in thediscussion about what message the author is trying tosend.Planning is an important part of getting the full valuefrom a lesson using shared reading. The focus orpurpose of the lesson should be clear in the teacher'smind. The shared reading is introduced, providing the necessary support based on what the teacherknows about the students. The teacher invites the students to join in and participate in the reading. Thetext is discussed, and the story or sequence of the story is retold. An important aspect of shared readingis in the discussions that accompany it. The teacher should also plan to reread the text several times andfor a variety of teaching purposes. Shared reading allows for support from the teacher as a model andfrom other students in an appropriate learning experience. This shared model has also been found toprovide access to language structure for English language learners and children with special needs.Shared reading is a teaching method with a wide variety of uses for both beginning and proficientreaders. Shared reading as a collaborative eventsupports the classroom built on the philosophy ofdeveloping a community of learners. The classroomcommunity is one in which we share our learning andsupport the learning of one another.
