Potok was inspired to write the chosen after WW2. He started to write it around the same time the zionist movements were going on. "The Chosen" has many references to WW2 and the zionist movements of his time. Some other things that inspired Chaim were various authors and books. One of said authors and books were James Joyce's book, "A Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man", which greatly influenced him.

Similarities Between Chaim and The Characters (The Malters)

Chaim has many similarities between the Malter family. For starters, Chaim was very religious and was Jewish. Chaim went to a synagogue to pray, had Shabbat, and did all the things he was supposed to. Like Reuven, he was good at writing, and eventually became a Rabbi. Like Mr. Malter, Chaim was a teacher for many years, at various schools. Chaim also was a zionist activist and voiced his opinion very often about it.

"The Promise" is set in New York in the 1950's. It is a continuation of the saga of Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders. The conflict between traditional and modern orthodox Judaism is continued and expanded throughout the story. The conflict becomes personal for both Reuven and Danny, Reuven being that his father tries to force him to choose between his way's of teaching, or Rav Kalman, his Talmud teacher from his final year in school. For Danny, it's falling in love with Rachel Gordon, the cousin of Michael Gordon, who is the son of Abraham Gordon, a well known writer who has been excluded for his books that question the foundation of Judaism.
