In the first chapter, we learned about this fellow dreamer (pg 4) Chris aka Alex takes this tough journey to Alaska to feel accomplished (pg 4) to live a life of his own and leave everything including his old identity behind. Chris was dropped off by a guy named Jim Gallien. During the journey, Jim questioned Chris as he saw how unprepared he was and offered him some more supplies. but Chris declined and insisted that he is fine with whatever he got. As he got dropped off, Gallien hoped that any sane person would come back alive (pg 7) when they start getting hungry and get some help. 

Analysis: I believe Chris is stupid for wanting to live a life of his own with so little supplies to survive. I understand that you want to go out and live your own life with no rules, but if you got everything like money, shelter, car, and everything essential, I just can't seem to understand why someone would just leave everything behind unless he has his own motive to kill himself.

Six Alaskans followed the Stampede Trail and found the bus (pg 10) and there was an SOS note and a red flag at the bus. One of the Alaskans went and found a sleeping bag with a dead man inside which turns out to be Chris. The State Troopers came to pick up Chris's body and his possessions which one of which is a journal about his journey. There was no source of identification (pg 14) on Chris, his real identity remains a mystery. They performed an autopsy (pg 13) but couldn't find any internal wounds or anything. They concluded that Chris died from starvation (pg 14) since his weight was only 67 pounds.

Analysis: R.I.P Chris, this shows why I'm still mad at the fact that he left everything behind and this shows just how mentally stupid he is just going out there and die.

The second half of this chapter focuses on Chris's real family problems and explains why he left, but his family had everything and he would've gotten anything he could've asked for. Chris wanted an unfiltered (pg 23) lifestyle and wanted to control his own destiny (pg 23)

Analysis: I understand that everyone had their family problems and wished they can just run away and live their own life, but to me Chris wanted to leave everything behind and not even be prepared for what is to come which is stupid.

This is the adventure (pg 30) Chris has not hoped for. As he was driving into lake mead and into an off-limit area, there was a thunderstorm which caused Chris to abandon his beloved simple beauty (33). He decided to bury his gun and burn all of his money. Crazy Ernie ripped Chris off and when he got out of it and tried to hitchhike, he got a ticket from the law enforcement and gave his real address to the police. The parents found out and hired an investigator to find where Chris is at. He takes a trip on a canoe (pg 32) and travels down to Mexico and he even almost died riding the canoe. When he was trying to get back to the US, he was stopped by law enforcement (pg 31) and was got in trouble as they took his handgun away. Even after all this unfortunate events Chris is just glad that he is alive (pg 37). 

Analysis: I still don't admire Chris, yes his mental mind is strong and stubborn and refuses to give up even after all those events. Imagine he wasn't lucky and would've died on the spot right there.

The coworkers remembered how Chris hated wearing socks as they were a requirement to wear at Mcdonald's but overall see him as a drifter (pg 40). He decided to quit Mcdonald's as they kept bugging him for socks and went to visit his mother-like figure Jan Burres and her husband which they were at a small community in Slab City which is known for drifters and people who are on the move just like Chris. Everyone there loved Chris and made a statement (pg 40) there as even a girl developed a crush on Chris. Overall, They liked how friendly (pg 44) Chris is. Eventually, he decided to leave because Jan would often try to mother (pg 46) him and he got irritated. 

Analysis: Chris is just a loveable social person who can get along with everybody. Still can't believe the guy worked at Mcdonald's because I wouldn't want to work there.

He picks up wayfarer (pg 48) Chris and the two of them immediately bond. Ron is like a paternal (pg 50) figure to Chris and he sees him as his son and tries to encourage him to settle down and start a new life, but Chris encourages Ron to do the opposite and set life on the road. The intimacy (pg 55) between them was no other and in fact, Ron tells him that he could adopt him which causes Chris to move on faster since he knew this is not what Chris wants and as a sense of security (pg 57) he writes Ron a letter to tell him to go have a life on the road. In the end, Ron does go live a life on the road but when a newspaper came and tells how Chris died, Ron felt massive pain and ended his sober streak. 

Analysis: This chapter wasn't all that sad, but can see why it may be heartbreaking to others. I understand Chris because when you know something like that is happening is best to move on quickly so you don't hurt yourself in the process

He had a sense of avoidance (pg 61) when it comes to Chris's actual parents as he wanted to leave them behind forever. We also got how close his relationship (pg 64) was between him and his sister Carine but still wanted to leave everything of them behind. His soul (pg 63) was more focused on his journey as that is what his main goal is. They described Chris as not much as a ladies man and his innocence (pg 66) is still there because he didn't get close to any girl or even wanted a relationship. At the end of the chapter, he sends postcards to the three of them before he set his journey to the stampede trail and wished them the best and how they might never hear from him again.

Analysis: It's crazy to me that Chris really left his family even left his younger sister which he deeply cared about because If I was him I wouldn't leave my younger brother no matter how much my parents and I would argue. Still crazy that he was so focused on his journey that he didn't even glance at any relationships.

The first guy mentioned is Gene Rossellini who wanted to live like the cavemen. He was an intelligent man who wanted to test out if humans today could survive like the cavemen from back then. No surprised, his idea didn't work out and he couldn't survive so in order to feel honor towards his failure he decided to stab himself in the chest and cause a self-inflicted (pg 75) wound. The second guy named John Waterman who was smart and an alpinist (pg 76). Perplexing (pg 70) as it may sounds this guy wanted to run for president and his main idea was to stop world hunger. Of course, he didn't win the election so he decided to set a course to Alaska and climb the highest mountain but no one has heard from him since and no one can find his remains. The final guy is named Carl McCunn. Carl was a fine guy but lacked common sense just like Chris. He was sure he wanted to go a second round trip (pg 76) but, ultimately he forgot to tell the guy to go back for him after a couple months. So after a couple months, it was winter time and carl was starving and needed help. A plane came by and tried to wave for help, but he didn't know that only raising one way it means you're okay and two hands means you need help. So he watched as the plane left him behind. You can already guess what has happened to him. 

Analysis: This chapter is just telling us that Chris is stupid but just not as stupid as these guys. I understand that the author wants to tell us Chris isn't the only one, but I still fail to see why Chris did that to himself.

Everett was a guy who loved the beauty (pg 87) of the wild and the outdoors. Just like Chris, Ruess was a wanderer (pg 90) who dropped out of university to seek his dream (pg 96) of going to the wilderness alone. He travels alone and suddenly changed his name to NEMO based on a character named Capitan Nemo from Everett's favorite book to read. During his trip to Utah, he suddenly disappears never to be heard from again. He wrote in his letters that he's going incommunicado (pg 93) for a couple of months. Three months passed and thus causing a search party to look for him. After looking and looking and could only find carvings of "NEMO 1934" and lost gear, he was never found. Stories were made about theories on how he died, some think he fell off a cliff, and even some believed he was killed by Native Americans, but one story was the one where he drowned based on his carvings near a body of water, it's safe to assume that he did die by drowning. At the end of the day, Everett was lost to his desire (pg 97) of living in the wild. 

Analysis: Another story of a man who is just like Chris who wanted to go on an adventure in the wild. This just shows that Chris is really not the only crazy one who just wanted to follow their dreams.

A radio show was talking about the story of Chris and then Westerberg hears the radio show and showed the troopers ID and social security number (pg 100) and proved the troopers he knows about Chirs. They searched in Virginia and called Sam McCandless. The troops faxed over a photograph (pg 101) of a headshot of Chris and confirmed that is indeed Chris. Sam had to go back home and tell his parents that Chris is dead (pg 102).  

Analysis: During the chapter, I find it fascinating how hard it is to identify someone just purely based on information from people and if they know the guy. Nowadays we can just look up who the guy is based on blood or DNA. Crazy to think how much of an impact Chris made throughout his journey.

When they moved to Virginia, The couple had no time for their family (pg 104) because they live paycheck by paycheck and always working. This causes Chris and his sister to create a deep sibling relationship to protect each other from their parents. The two siblings inherited (pg 108) the smarts from their family and both Carrie and Chris are incredibly gifted (pg 106) with wits and smarts just like their dad but never wanted to extend his IQ since he didn't like to be told on. This existence (pg 107) is hard on them and caused Chris to leave everything behind and go out on his adventure. Great sorrow (pg  116) has come to the family when they found out that Chris is no longer here. 

Analysis: We learned more about Chris's family and his relationship with his dad. I kinda now understand why he would leave everything, Family toxicity can be too much to handle.

Chris went back to his old neighborhood in California and learned many dark secrets about what happened with his father and his family. Chris's father was juggling two different wives and two different families. After learning this, his love for his father was deteriorated (pg 121) and began wanting to leave everything behind. Chris becomes impatient (pg 120) and wants to throw everything away and become his own independence (pg 125)causing him to go on the road trip and never see his family again. 

Analysis: Didn't know why his dad is like how he is and now I completely understand why Chris wanted to leave and go on his own. Who wouldn't want to leave after learning such terrible things?

On the airplane back home, she decided to eat everything the air waitress gave her because she didn't want to throw away food since Chris starved (pg 131) to death. 

Analysis: This chapter really felt real to me as sibling love is just something you truly cherish. The bond between these two siblings is unmatched.

He had his passions (pg 135) and one of them was to climb Devil's Thumb and go out on an adventure. Devil's Thumb is a very tough climb as it ascents to The Stikine Ice Cap. Just like Chris, the author wanted nothing more than to climb Devil's Thumb. His obsession with climbing was his desideratum (pg 137). He went and withstand against snowstorms while crossing deadly pathways. He was tired and in despair (pg 138)that he didn't even get to the real climbing of Devil's Thumb. He waited for someone to drop off supplies for him and when the guy left, he often felt alone and helpless (pg 141). The next morning he decided its time to climb the summit, but panics (pg 143) because he can't reach and his only option was to go down. 

Analysis: Another story to try and convince the reader that Chris ain't the only crazy one to follow his dreams and go out in the wild. I see the resemblance between the author and Chris and give us another reason why he would want to write a book about Chris.

He decided to light one up to feel better. Mystified (pg 146), he smelled fire and saw that he accidentally set fire on one side of his tent. Troubled, he decided to look back on why he decided to go on this trip and we learned about his relationship with his father. The author thought his life was like a contest (pg 147) with his father pushing to become a doctor and also wanting to climb Devil's Thumb. After reviewing those memories, his ambition (pg 150) is to climb the thumb. Seeking redemption (pg 151) he decided to try again and this time he finally made it on top of the thumb. He went back down and got off the mountain, he told a few people about his accomplishment but they rather seem to not care. He seems to reflect on why he did this and how loneliness (pg 152) attacked him at times. Writing this shows that Chris didn't go just to die but simply just followed his crazy dream.

Analysis: This chapter continued from the last chapter and sees how Chris would feel if he finished his journey and lived to tell the tale. Always made me question if he truly felt happy that he did what he did.

The river (pg 162) by the trail was too dangerous to cross over so he went back to the infamous bus (pg 163). After reading a passage from a book about saying happiness should be shared with others. He changed his mind and wanted to go back with the people. Since the river was too dangerous to cross, he felt sad and alone (pg 163) so he decided to chill at the bus till the river is safe to cross. 

Analysis: This guy could've been safe and with people if he just had a map and found out that the river was easily crossable. Sometimes the most difficult problems can be solved with the easiest solutions.

Unlike Chris, These men actually brought a map and see that a cable car is there to cross the river that Chris could've used. On the way to the bus (pg 174), they talked about the Alaskans (pg 186) who said that Chris mistook a caribou as a moose thus calling him incompetent (pg 177), and knew he was an amateur. This theory turned out to be false and was indeed a moose. They eventually found the bus and decided to camp out instead of inside as it felt wrong to sleep where Chris died. Throughout the night the men had their respect (pg 181) for Chris and thought he was just like them. 

Analysis: As I said, if Chris had a map a completely different story would've been told and who knows maybe Chris would live to tell the tale.

During his mission impossible (pg 187), he was reading a book and underlined passages such as Happiness is only real when shared and caused theories that he wanted to go back home. In one journal entry, he said that he is weak and dying from starvation (pg 187). They were possible theories on why he died quickly and the main topic was that he was poisoned. He either ate bad seeds, ate seeds that are poisonous (pg 192), or made a mistake by eating the wrong seeds. The most logical one is the one where he ate the wrong seeds and his body couldn't fight off the poison because of his health. The catastrophe (pg 195) was that he died quickly from the poison and from starvation. He knew he didn't have much time left, so he decided to take a pic with a sign that said "I have had a happy life and thank the lord. Goodbye and may God bless us all." He went inside his sleeping bag and died but, it looked like he was finally at peace (pg 199). 

Analysis: This guy man. You either love him or you hate him for doing what he did. We can all agree and give him an endless amount of respect for following his dream when others are scared to even take the first step.

I already made some sort of plan and estimate on how much money I will need for a 2 week trip to Japan. I would to take some of my friends as well because we share the same hobbies. So I pray that one day I will be able to go to Japan and see everything I would like to see.  McCandless and I are kinda similar in a way that nothing will stop us in our dream. Unlike McCandless however I would not just throw away absolute everything for it LMAO.
