Summary : At this point Robert Leckie just enlisted into the marines he wanted to enlist the day after Pearl Harbor but the marines had insisted for him to be circumcised so he joined four weeks after the war with japan started

Type (Character Development and Explanation) : The Pearl Harbor just got attacked on Robert decided to join the marines, this is a turning point because it changed the whole course of his life and how he was as a character in the book and that is why it is a turning point

“We had come across the Jersey meadows, riding the Erie commuter line, and then on the ferry over the Hudson River to downtown New York. Breakfast at home had been subdued. My mother was up and about; she did not cry. It was a heart-rending leave-taking, nor was it brave, resolute-- and of those words that fail to describe the thing

Summary : Here Robert and the marines storm the beaches of Guadalcanal, and Robert also fights in the Battle of Tenaru, this battle was also one of Roberts firsts battle in the war and when he first hit the realization about this war and first experienced it first hand and I think it affected him as a person

Type (Character Development and Explanation) : I think this can be mainly be seen as the turning point because this was the first time Robert was ever shooting someone to kill and he was killing, it truly did change his persona and him as a person which is why it did change his personality and had character development in the story
MLA-cited quote : “I was glad he gave me this little order to execute. I was having no fun standing in the pit, watching the gentleman fire. I crawled out and told everyone what he had said. They ignored it and kept banging away. There cam a lull, and in that silent space I who had no chance to fire my own weapon, blasted away with my pistol. I leaned over the mound and shoved my pistol-clenching hand into the dark and emptied a clip.”

Summary : Here Robert and them got super drunk for partying a little bit too hard. When it was finally sun rise a sergeant from the night before waked up Robert and rushed him to where the main officers were, where Robert was finally going to get sent back for an examination but he never did

Type (Character Development and Explanation) : I think this can be mainly be seen as a character development because Robert just got into big time trouble for being drunk in a wa and the sergeant didn't take him lightly, he could have shipped Robert away but that would be too easy, I think Robert may have realized what he had done and regretted it but at the end he did get away with only five days bread and water, reduced to private as his punishment which he thought was extremely lucky

“I'm not going to ruin your life,” “he said, and my stomach that had been fleeing seemed to pause, and turn.” “I could put you away for a long time for what you've done. Being drunk is no excuse a marine is supposed to be able to handle his liquor. You’ve got a good war record, though” “he went on, leafing the pages of my record book again” “and you seem to have a good background. So I’m not going to ship you back to Portsmouth, where the books says i should ship you but i'm not going to let you get away with it (165)

Then it occurred to me that I could not see over the grass. Should the Jap pass by, I could only see his legs to shoot at." (213)

Summary : Robert just got injured in the invasion of peleliu, who got wounded by a mortar explosion, on D - Day plus one. Ever since he got injured he was not able to do much in the war so they decide to ship him back to the United States for treatment

Type (Character Development and Explanation) : I think this is Character Development because Robert is finally somewhere where he doesn't hear constant gun shots, he doesn't hear planes over his head, he is out of the war, Robert finally gets time to reflect on everything that happened which I think is something that will help his character development

MLA-cited quote : " It was difficult not to vent my vexation at having been placed in the P - 38 Ward , rather than in some place which seemed more likely to cure my weak kidneys as I called it. But i stayed silent watching Doctor Gentle as he bent, grunting to give me the "hammer test." This was to strike a patients crossed leg just below the knee to measure the speed of his reflexes."

Summary : The war just ended, all the fighting was over the world wasn't at full peace but the war just came to the end, now that the war is over Robert gets discharged from the armed forces and can now stay in the United States.

Type (Character Development and Explanation) : I think part of the book is a huge turning point because the war is over now Robert can look back on everything that he did in the war he has all the time now to think to himself instead of getting in trouble I should have been training. Now that the war is over I think Robert will have too much time on his hands.

MLA-cited quote : "There would be a bigger reunion in San Diego, when all of us would have arrived home at last even Chuckler would be there, leaning on a cane with the laughter rumbling from his deep chest and once more we would be as carefree as the early days in New River, the ordeal behind us and the prospect of home before us........ Were leaving Peleliu, departing the holocaust" (255)
