The style is very minimal but the shapes balance each other out and the negative spaces is also very calming in this instance.

The three guns are placed on the right side of the blue square which balances the blue square that is also on closer to the right. Furthermore, all the lines lead the eyes of the viewer to the three guns.

All the lines lead to the text but the colors aligned in a circle and the opacity illustrates the depth of the poster creating an illusion of a flying boat. Moreover, the colors red, orange and blue balances out as the boat shows these colors in various spaces, and the elements in the blue rectangular is showing the balance of elements in sizes.

 

The reason I chose him was because of his ability to capture movement as well as showcase the issues of the world in his posters.

I chose Michael Johnson because the poster below interested me as how you can incorporate a lot more text but still have a photo as the main focus.

Klee’s art had a mix media approach. He would mix oil paint, watercolor, ink, pastel and more into one small scale artwork. Often switching from monochromatic to polychromatic color pallet. In addition, he uses grids and geometric forms with letters, number, people, and animals or completely switched to abstract. Many of his artwork refer to his dry humor, political conventions, or to poetry, music, and dreams.

 

Paul Klee’s art was like a child, wonderful and always changing. Not one thing but many.

His work opened the doors of many new ways to conduct, color, and understand art. He created the abstraction period as he believed that art should convey the metaphysical realm rather than the materialistic. 

 

He broke the traditional painting method and instead ‘[avoided] recognizable content in favor of strokes and symbols that expressed emotion and the unconscious’ (Gotthardt, 2018, para. 7). In addition, many American Surrealist used Klee’s method of plumbing their subconscious to start artist inspiration. His theories, artistic methods, and essays were discussed in prestigious art schools at the time.

A Dadaism piece has a sense of humor to it and tends to be absurd. They would experiment with the laws of chance and with ‘readymade’ objects. It is meant to be satirical to the social and political onslaught of the time. Like WW1.


Philosophy:

The Dada movement rejected reason, rationality, and order of the emerging capitalist society, instead favoring chaos, nonsense, and anti-bourgeois sentiment.

 

The Dadaists were asking a very serious question about the role of art in the modern age.

French artist who broke down the boundaries between works of art and everyday objects.His irreverence for conventional aesthetic standards led him to devise his famous readymades and heralded an artistic revolution. Duchamp was one of the founders of the Dadaism and created iconic work such as the Fountain 1917.

In 1921 he renounced Dada on the grounds that it was no longer vital and had lost its capacity to shock.

In 1915 Man Ray met the French artist Marcel Duchamp, and together they collaborated on many inventions and formed the New York group of Dada artists. In paris he was inspired by the liberation promoted by these groups, he experimented with many media. His experiments with photography included rediscovering how to make “cameraless” pictures, or photograms, which he called rayographs.

• Design Process: Have you explored different ideas, developed the chosen idea,

and organized your process in a clear manner?

For the design process I explored the different artworks of the Dada artists printing

them out and using it as a reference. I wanted to show that Dada was very

experimental and diverse in their style as they had collages, photos, ready-mades, and drawings. Each style was different but had the sense of exploration. For the artists I decided each would have their own style implemented to them such as Man Ray being in a rayograph or Hannah Höch being a collage. For the What category each card had either a drawing, collage, readymade, or painting to represent that idea. While the Iconic work category I placed each art in a way to showcase their

features. The back design shows how experimental Dada is with their title

placement.

• Design: How have you utilized the visual space and arranged design elements

across that space, onto multiple surfaces?

I have utilized the space by letting there be space between the content, design element, and titles. At the same time, I created directional lines between them to lead the viewers eyes to the content. For instance, in the aesthetic card I used the duck (called victor) to border the content. The same goes across for all the what categories. While the Iconic work category I made the photo collage on the edge, the Mona Lisa large to showcase what Marcel Duchamp did, and the Fountain on

display. The Who category has the figures dominating on the left-hand side, and looking to the right where the content is. The back design is busy but shows that Dada is a very messy and experimental movement. There is a sense of balance within my work, hierarchy, scale, space, unity, scale, and proxiemty.

• Craftsmanship: Is the final outcome professionally rendered with fine attention to

detail?

I believe the final outcome is professional rendered as I categorized each set of

cards according to color, allowed there to be space for the design to speak, designed the content to be legible, made the cards simple enough to contrast the

business of the back design.

I have searched the content from several sources such as from artsy, smart history,

Britannica, the arts tory, Vanderbilt university, and the collector. I also found several photos of the artwork created during this time to reference for my cards.

• Research: Which events, art and design movements and styles characterize the

period of time?

The major event if Dada is World War 1 (WW1). When the group of artists decided that they no longer wanted to witness the horror of war, this was their way to rebel. Their art shocked everyone with their artwork as it was unusual at the time and had a political humor to it. The group were against not just war but capitalism.

• Visual Application: Which design style (or combinations of styles) have you utilized,

and how were they applied throughout the design outcomes

(typography, colors, layout, etc)? Have you justified your application in a convincing

manner?

The design styles I have incorporated are photo collages, ready-mades, drawings, and photography. I used Plantin for the body text as that was font used during this

time, while the title font was made out of magazine cutouts to give it that collage

effect. The main elements each incorporated either a photo, collage, readymade, or a drawing if some sort. The colors I have used were dark greys and browns which

is meant to look aging to show how old the era is due to it being 100 years. While the back has red, black, and off white with the texture of a newspaper (that was

also a part of all the cards) making it busy like what Dada can be. I did make each card have that sense of humor except for the iconic work as they can speak for themselves. For example, the cheese with the hat is a nod to swiss cheese and

Switzerland where Dada was probably founded. I believe that I have applied the design style in a convince manner because it is a bit unexpected, has that sense of humor, and is sort of experimental but with a bit of a structure to show the content. For example, instead of putting Mr. Cheese where Soho (the zebra) is I put him in

the philosophy which makes the viewer curious. And the package also has an unexpected surprise.
