It is unknown if vertical/transplacental transmission of COVID-19 is possible during vaginal birth. Our goal is to answer this question by looking at the outcomes of newborn children for both COVID-19 positive and COVID-19 negative mothers who have given birth vaginally.

Your story will help us determine if COVID-19 can be transmitted from mother to child during a vaginal birth. The infographic below demonstrates our current knowledge on giving birth during this novel pandemic. It is clear that there is a large gap in knowledge concerning the birthing process. Help us fill in the gaps in order to protect future newborns from COVID-19.

Our research team wishes to collect data on vaginal births during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research will effect mothers and babies all around the world, and will either provide evidence that vertical/transplacental transmission of COVID-19 is possible, or provide evidence that it is not. This information is imperative to ensure that necessary safety protocols can be implemented to protect newborns from COVID-19.

With your help, our research team will be able to provide evidence in support of or against the idea that COVID-19 can be spread from mother to newborn during a vaginal birth. By assessing both COVID-19 negative and COVID-19 positive mothers, we can examine transmission trends in order to discover more about possible transmission routes of COVID-19. It is necessary to assess newborns that were all born in the same environment (Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women's Hospital) to ensure that no outside sources are responsible for COVID-19 transmission.
