"May I lie dead, hidden deep under a burial mound, before I hear about your screaming, as you are dragged away" (Iliad page 49).
-Trinity Pham

During the book, we find that Hector fights in the war not for his family, but for his status. He still strips men from their armor to build upon his ego. Contrasting to the Man in the Water because he did it because he wanted to help people.
-Trinity Pham

Unlike Hector, the man in the the water was completely selfless in his actions and saved people not to be remembered but because it was the right thing to do. Hector on the other hand, though in the beginning it seemed as though he was fighting for his people, it evolved into a fight for his ego and his title.
(Janay Sukkarieh)

Although Hector admits to show love and risk his life for his family, his actions do not compare to the Man in the Water's heroic ones. The man in the Water chose to make a noble choice and put his life before a strangers. However, Hector's actions of selfishness did not follow through with what his intentions were.
-Lina Garber

An example to the different intentions of Hector and the Man in the Water was when Hector was all fired up about killing Patroclus and wanted to fight against Achilles even though no one knew he had a chance. However, unlike the generous act of the Man in the Water, Hector did this for the attention he would get by people, rather than staying loyal to his army and family.
-Lina Garber

Hector and the man in the water are similar because they both put their lives at risk to help people without the certainty of any reward. They selflessly risked their lives in order to help people which is extremely honourable.
(Janay Sukkarieh)
