Collaboration takes such an important place in the work that occurs within the theater. Theatre is a deeply collaborative process, as there are so many facets within the medium. There is a need for thorough communication between all these different groups, and even between members of the same group. One area in my classes that I felt exercised this area particularly well was the class performance as collaborative practice. From the name of the class alone, it is already apparent that collaboration will in some way, shape, or form, play a part of the curriculum of the class. This would be a correct and accurate assumption, as throughout the entirety of the class and its multiple separate rotations, working with others was always valued. We worked together to create smaller pieces and ideas, all to prepare us for creating our final devised piece which will be performed at the lab theater at the end of the semester. I know I will take what I have learned in this class with me in the future in theater, or in any situation in which I need to work with others to achieve a goal. In this class I would work long hours, typically from 6-10 every day for close to around 3-4 weeks. So what exactly did we do in this class? Well to summarize briefly, we were responsible for working the tech in one of a few given shows that were slated to take place throughout the spring semester. When I eventually enrolled in class later a few weeks into the semester, I let Communicated that I was going to in fact be in the Cohen New Works Festival, and that I would greatly appreciate that if the show I would work at would be before then or tech week. The Professor for the class Austin Shirley gladly allowed it, and was a great help for the rest of the process. I was fortunate that he was willing to work with myself and others to come to and seek solutions when situations like my own emerged. He also directed us with ease and grace and was overall a great help. To continue on my experience in the class I was soon put into situations that I had no real prior experience in. Fortunately there were people to help me along the way from the beginning, and I would soon adorn the role of being the swing for both of the UTNT shows. Some days I would work the sound booth, some I would do Integrated Media, others I may be a grip. Whatever I worked on I made sure that I put the work in and did what I needed to do. Throughout the entire experience if there were a few takeaways it would be two things. The first is a strengthened work ethic, and the second is a diversification in my skill set in tech-theater. This class was a really incredible one to be a part of, as Corey Allen was an incredible acting teacher to be able to work with. He is incredibly intelligent when it comes to working on character, and is able to challenge and teach myself and the rest of the students in my class daily. His approach to acting is logical yet creative, and the exercising he utilized in order to help us explore things we may not have otherwise thought on our own was great to experience. I will continue to use these exercises in the future, and I will in fact take most of what I worked on in his class with me in the future, as I act and work on projects as well. One takeaway that I'm proud to say I've gathered from the class is the acknowledgment of how big of a world acting really is, yet now I have new tools to navigate this world, which makes me quite happy.
