This battle made the confederate army lose over 28,000 men in the battle. The general of the confederacy army almost quit but the president didn't let himself. The battle showed the better tactics of the North. The Confederacy lost alot of supplies and was so bad that General Lee was about to quit as he blamed himself for what happened. More than 23,000 people died because of Lee's mistake. He led the soldiers to a slaughterhouse. It was a turning point for the north and a horrible loss for the confederacy and the beginning of the end for the south .

This would have been a good plan if McDowell's troops were experienced, but they weren't. Beauregard had spies in Washington learned that McDowell was preparing to attack. McDowell's inexperienced troops moved slowly in their attack giving Beauregard significant time to prepare. However, the Confederacy turned the tide.

This was the first major battle victory for the Confederate however the Confederate army remained unorganized. In contrast the battle gave the Union a call to arms, and not to underestimate their opponents. The union became more prepared for the subsequent battles to come due to the loss. George B. McClellan replaced Irwin McDowell, and trained and reorganized the Union army into a more disciplined force. This eventually helped the Union in winning the overall American Civil War, although the Union would suffer another defeat at Bull Run in 1862.

When did it take place? The siege took much longer than your typical battle. It began on May 18, 1863 and lasted over a month until July 4, 1863. The commander for the Union forces was General Ulysses S. Grant. Grant led the Army of Tennessee and had over 35,000 men under his command. Other Union generals included William T. Sherman and john. The city of Vicksburg is located on the Mississippi River. It was the last major port on the river held by the South. If the North could take Vicksburg, the Confederacy would be cut off from supply lines to the west. Also, rebel states such as Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas would be isolated from the rest of the South.
