it was later known as city varieties music hall and city varieties is only one of three music halls still standing in the UK. in victorian times there were no seats and just had a standing area. If the audience didn't like the act then they would throw food at the stage (tomatoes). The little boys would stand at the top of the theatre. The environment then was rowdy and smelly.

1880 - upper circles balconies are added to increase capacity to over 800 people.

The upstairs seats were added for extra room for more customers to sit. There is a myth that Prince Edward came to see his "crush"/secret girlfriend perform, he would sit on these seats behind a curtain so no one could see him. He later gave the varieties the royal crest (the ornament/wall art in the centre of the wall above the stage) we think he did that to say thank you to the varieties for keeping his secret.

The invention of a microphone and the advantages.

microphones were not used in theatre to amplify a human voice until late 1930s. The microphone helps the audience be able to hear the performer even from the back of the music hall. They had a few musical performers who would sing for the audience, the shape of the hall helps everyone hear clearly but when microphones started getting used it helped for the sound to be more crisp. Using a microphone meant they could whisper and not be loud but still be heard.

Thomas Edison was one of the first to show talking pictures commercially. The creation of speakers has helped with theatre because the audience can now hear sound more crisp and loud now. without speakers the audience wont have been able to hear the performers properly.

What the audience wanted then.

In victorian times and onwards the audience just wanted a social environment to go to when they had free time. They had comedians and performers to make them laugh and shock them. Back then they didn't have TV's so they needed entertainment. Their entertainment was watching performers or pubs. Having a drink and meeting new people or just sitting watching a show. Everything was very real for them so the performers had to do something risky or funny to entertain the crowd.

What they want now.

In the modern day people have TV's, AI,social media and social events to entertain them. So nowadays it's harder to entertain a crowd and do something they've never seen before. Today people want original ideas and concepts. In theatre they now do shows but change it up a bit. so now we have rock and roll pantos, musicals ect. Today is very different from back then. People have high expectations now compared to back then. City varieties have started doing shows that are neurodivergent children friendly. People have put in ideas and demands and city varieties has followed them.

They used candles and gas before this light was made. using a proper light was more effective because they could make one of the people on stage the focal point instead of just a house light. This is now safer too because they can have people controlling the lights backstage.

The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and related legislation places duties on employers, employees, the self-employed and those in control of premises. This basically means that they have put laws in place to keep people safe. for example, one of the laws is, you always have to be on ground level. you cannot work at height, to keep you and others safe.

Another law is manual handling.

People using the equipment have to be employees. They have to keep equipment away from guests and away from anyone to stop there being a risk of injury. more than half of the injuries caused are from manual handling, from heavy objects when doing travel shows. this means they have to keep everyone safe by keeping their equipment out of the way.
