The states were required to grant African-American men the vote and to ratify the Fourteenth Amendment in order to reenter the Union. The act was created to enforce the laws on the south. Without the military in the south they would not follow the law. Barnes. I am a African American. These few years have been a struggle. All I know is how to farm. I have been educated by the local school to read and write. My life is better but still terrible. I sharecrop. I farm for most of the day and only get 6 hours of sleep. I farm until my crops are harvested and nearly starve all year. When I started sharecropping I had to take a loan then farm and sell my left over crops. It is an endless cycle of nothing.
