In the 1920s, Americans found new ways to enjoy their leisure time, with jazz, sports, and cinema all gaining incredible popularity. Jazz, born from African American communities, became the soundtrack of the decade, filling clubs and dance halls with its lively, improvisational spirit. People flocked to listen and dance to jazz, making it a symbol of the era’s energy and cultural blending. Sports also became a national obsession, with baseball, boxing, and college football drawing large crowds and creating legendary figures like Babe Ruth.

Hollywood, meanwhile, became the film capital of the world. Silent films attracted international audiences, offering exciting and romanticized glimpses of American life. Movie studios discovered that stars like Charlie Chaplin could turn any film into a hit, and soon fan magazines and publicity campaigns celebrated these celebrities. Going to the movies was a common pastime, and as people watched Hollywood’s glamorous world, American culture and ideals spread globally. Cinema, along with jazz and sports, helped shape the ‘roaring’ character of the decade, as people embraced a lifestyle that felt fresh, modern, and exciting.

During the Harlem Renaissance, Black Americans experienced cultural expression but faced oppressive racial segregation in the South and across the country. Jim Crow laws made them second-class citizens. During the Great Migration, they faced de facto segregation, limited job opportunities, and lower wages. Racism hindered their participation in progress. Racial violence also escalated during this period, with events like the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921.

The Roaring Twenties were a period of change and prosperity for some, but not for all. Social, racial, and economic inequalities persisted, and many groups were excluded from the economic boom and social advances that characterized the decade. The myth of a golden decade of enjoyment and success obscures the significant struggles of millions of Americans who did not share in the benefits of economic growth and modernization.
