The narrator runs to the devil for help and friendship. He does this to make him feel less lonely and thinks he has no other option. The devil refuses to help and wants him to handle it on his own. The narrator wants to indulge in self-destructive behaviors, but even the devil wants no part of it. The devil is not who the narrator expected.
