Create Emotionally, Intellectually, and Physically Safe Environments - During our new teacher training at the beginning of the year, we have facilitated a Jigsaw with Harry Wong's First Days of Schools book and stress the importance of consistent procedures and routines. Our coaches also use this resource throughout the year when coaching teachers.

Last year we struggled with Standards-Aligned Curriculum and Instruction. We worked on "challenging grade-level" content and "engage learners in productive struggle." Because many students were grade levels behind in content, teachers were wanting to teach to the students' abilities- not grade level. Also, we were not allowing students to struggle. However, after a year of working on these goals, there has been much growth.

I modeled classroom procedures, consistency, and voice tone and level for a teacher for a week. Then, I popped in the next week to observe how it was going. The teacher seemed more confident and relaxed and the students were as well.

Meeting the needs of all learners is always a tough one. We have had an influx of ESL students over the past couple of years. They come with either no English or very little and at different times throughout the school year. It's difficult to meet their needs to say the least.

We look at the Optimal Learning Environment handout and talk about what that would look like in their classroom. We discuss establishing and addressing all three domains. This discussion is usually done within the first 2-3 sessions or conversations. I usually use a CAL tool to get this conversation started.

We tend to really focus on the standards-aligned curriculum and instruction. Getting teachers to think about how every lesson connects back to standards while also meeting students where they are. We are also focusing on engagement and have discussed the difference between physical engagement and cognitive engagement.

definitely meeting the needs of diverse learners. In my small rural community most everyone tends to be very similar, so much so that I think my teachers struggle with addressing diversity. We as a district are working to bring in others to help teachers meeting the needs of diverse learners better.

We have taken time to allow teachers who are struggling with Creating an Optimal Teaching Environment to go and visit other classrooms where we feel they can model the qualities of the kind of Teaching Environment that we would like to see. We discuss the importance of setting clear expectations and routines and spending time teaching those instead of expecting students to just ¨know¨ what to do.

Standards Aligned Curriculum and Instruction has been a challenge for some and not the ones you would expect! For me its been harder to get my more experienced teachers to really step back and look at the rigor and standards of a lesson, they tend to be emotionally attached to ¨activities¨ that ¨have worked in my classroom for years¨ and don't want to change it or let it go because its what they consider fun or engaging.
