It's origin dates back to 3rd Century BCE when it was extensively worn by the royals of Rajasthan and Gujarat in India. Kundan hasn't lost it's popularity in the 21st century either but less is known of it's value in the western world. 
Lack of popularity abroad and cheaper versions available back home propelled the kundan artisans out of work.
