Stage: New Life (At the climax, the hero is severely tested once more on the threshold of home. He or she is purified by a last sacrifice, another moment of death and rebirth, but on a higher and more complete level. By the hero's action, the polarities that were in conflict at the beginning are finally resolved.

Application: Fight off Suitors

Odysseus passed Penelope's challenge of firing an arrow through 12 rings and revealed his tru identity to the suitors. He and Telemachus then fought off the suitors. In the end, the suitors and the palace maids who slept with them were gone.

Odysseus wandered into the hut of the swineherd Eumaeus and stayed there for awhile until his son, Telemachus, came one day. He was disguised as a beggar at that time. The two reunited and came up a plan to take back their home.

Application: Cyclopes

'"Stranger, you are a simple fool, or come from far off, when you tell me to avoid the wrath of the gods or fear them. The Cyclopes do not concern themselves over Zeus of the aegis, nor any of the rest of the blessed gods, since we are far better than they […]."' (9.273-287). This was one of Polyphemus's lines when he first met Odysseus. Later on, the two did not get on as friends and Odysseus had planned to blind the Cyclops to escape his island while tricking him into thinking that Odysseus's name was "Nohbdy."

Application: Trip home to Ithaca with Phaeacians' guidance, known for their sailing expertise

 The Phaeacians sailors, seeing that Odysseus was sleeping, left him on the Ithacan shore and departed. But Poseidon resented the way they had helped Odysseus and changed the ship and crew to stone.

Stage: Crisis/The Ordeal/Revelation (Near the middle of the story, the hero enters a central space in the Special World and confronts death or faces his or her greatest fear.

Application: Calypso

"He eventually drifts to Ogygia, the  home of Calypso, who keeps him on her island for seven years," (Book 12). Out of the 10 years in which he was gone, the most time that he spent in one place was here on Calypso's island where we was held as a guest. The only reason she let Odysseus go was because Hermes told her to.

Stage: Apotheosis/Reward (The hero takes possession of the treasure won by facing death. There may be celebration, but there is also danger of losing the treasure again.

Application: Alcinous gives gift of a ship to return to Ithaca

 "With this  episode, Odysseus ends the telling of his tale to King Alcinous," (Book 12). After telling King Alcinous the tale of his journey, the king presented him with rich gifts and presented him a ship for his travel home.
