Sensation: The Mind-Body Connection

I was not aware that the signals move around the nervous system at over 250 miles per hour. I think the speed they work at is fascinating because of how precise the action being carried out is. A point that stuck out to me was that the nerves allow an individual to not have to think in order to make tiny adjustments, such as Matt in the video. It's interesting to me to think about how fast the nerves in my body are working even when I'm doing simple tasks.

I learned about how the sensory system performs faster and more efficiently than any computer. In the video, Matt's sensory system is calculating and balancing altitude, speed, and position all at the same time with the use of the brain. I thought this was interesting because people think that the inner-workings of a computer is fascinating, yet don't seem to realize that the inner-working of their own bodies are moving so fast to produce every action they perform.

Learning that Matt and Shannon were able to survive for 8 days in 130 degree heat, I wonder how much longer they would have survived if they did not bury themselves in the sand to insulate their bodies. They were able to survive for the remaining 4 days without water and dealt with symptoms that made them hallucinate. I learned that hallucination can happen by losing only three percent of the body's water.

I liked learning about how smart the body is because of it's immediate response to harsh conditions. An example would be dehydration. I learned that when the body is dehydrated, the nerves drain water from other parts of the body in order to keep key organs such as the heart, kidneys, and lungs running.
