A. Discuss the impact of colonial rule in Africa and Asia with reference to THREE characteristics.

Answer) Colonial Rule impacted Africa and Asia on a major scale. First Off, Colonial Rule had increased the infrastructure in the continents. During colonial rule, powers ,like the British, set up infrastructure to promote the harvesting of resources and the fluidity of the colony. When they left the infrastructure stayed to improve the well being of the area. Secondly, Colonialism improved government within the areas in which were colonized. The colonial powers instated efficient and stable forms of government, democracy, which represented the views of multiple parties. This stable and efficient government allowing the continents of Asia and Africa to be more modernized and well set on the basis of government. Colonialism may seem all positive, but it does have a negative effect. This negative impact is the decrease in stability in the nation as a whole. Due to colonization, the continent was divided into areas with little to no basis towards culture. This led to rival cultures being placed together which resulted in conflict and instability. Colonialism has pros and cons, but had a major impact on the continents of Asia and African.

B. Discuss if we should celebrate or denounce Empire building.

Answer) We should celebrate Empire building, due to it being apart of the world's history. Empires molded the countries and even continents of today. They created infrastructure in areas which allowed many nations to have enough stability to grow into what they are today. They also spread religion, which added to the culture of areas, developing the culture we now today. In further thought, Empire building developed the governments of the world today, which then reflects on relations, conflicts, and even the world history (wars) that we have become accustomed to today. Empire building should be celebrated, due to creating the culture, stability, and history of our great planet Earth.

A) Colonialism has affected Africa and Asia in many ways. One way it has affected it is how the Europeans took over. By barging in and claiming the land, they disrupted many different forms of governments of the natives, many of which were doing just fine without European rule. Another way it affected Africa and Asia is what the Europeans did when they got there. They saw the native culture and, instead of allowing them to continue it, forced their beliefs of Christianity and Democracy onto the natives, destroying some of the cultures in their path for God, Gold and Glory. Another negative affect it had on the natives would not be resolved until centuries after they arrived. They would take natives back to Europe and sell them, often to the newly formed America, as slaves. These are only a few ways colonialism has negatively affected Africa and Asia.

B) Some see the colonialism in Africa and Asia and praise it. Others look at it and shake their heads in disgust. I think we should be glad that Europe had set up colonies in those continents, even if the way they did was unorthodox. Obviously I don’t approve of the slave trading or the destruction of cultures, but at the same time the colonies that have persisted have advanced much farther than what they used to be, which may not have happened if we hadn’t set up colonies. I believe we should be happy, but at the same time loosen our grip on the colonies we’ve established. Those colonies are like Europe’s children, and they have been holding them above the water for a long time. They have to stop holding them up and let them swim, or operate, on their own.

A. Discuss the impact of colonial rule in Africa and Asia with reference to THREE characteristics.
- In Africa and Asia colonial rule has benefited them greatly but have also made the countries lose important aspects of their culture. A benefit of colonial rule was that it brought technologies that helped advance their social, political, and economical growth. Democracy was introduced along with other forms of government. Before the Europeans little laws were created which hurt the countries. The colonization of Asia and Africa allowed for each group to discover more things. Every big country during this period made a claim to these lands and with them claimed new foods and spices. In Africa, Europeans introduced many things one of them being education. Africa and Asia were able to trade with the Europeans which helped with their economy. However, everything did not run so smoothly. Europeans forced their religion onto Asians and Africans. They took Africans and turned them into slaves to make a profit. They even brought the black death (aka the plague) to both countries which killed off millions. The Europeans wanted what was best for their country without really thinking what would be beneficial to Asia and Africa. During these times there were the three G's, Gold, God, and Glory which clouded many of the Europeans judgments.
B. Discuss if we should celebrate or denounce Empire building.
When empires first began they were a good thing for those uninhabited places. They brought about colonization which boosted many countries. Without the empires religions, languages, culture, food, and many other things would not have been able to spread as much as they have today. However now a days its time for empires to come to an end which is why I think they should be denounced. Every play that can inhabited on earth is by humans which means no more need for colonization. Every country has a government and a set of rules or a constitution to follow. Most countries are independent and do not fall under an empire which is reason to have their own set of rules. Countries under empires lose a great deal of sovereignty. Back in the those times empires killed millions of people that didn't conform to what they wanted. The empires focused on what was best for them and not anyone else which was very bad for developing countries. The developing countries under an empire can not have their own identity which is what most counties thrive from. Any country under empire rule will be thought of as only a country under that rule not as their own country. Therefor I think empires could have once been celebrated but should now be denounced.

- Colonial rule has affected Asia and Africa in both positive and negative ways, regardless of intention. A positive consequence of colonial rule is that it helped Africa and Asia modernize. This was done by trading manufactured goods and investing in the colony. This lead to an increase in the standard of living, job opportunity, and economic growth. Cultural spread of European language, religion, ethics, etc. was also a result of colonial rule. This has had both devastating and exceptional effects; some of which are still being felt today. A devastating cultural effects is that due to some empires forcing the native people to act, speak, and believe as they did. The cultures that survived this have been struggling to survive to this day against assimilation due to modernization and globalization. Unfortunately this had breed strong fundamentalist parties like the Taliban and ISIS. An exceptional result is that colonial rule has spread democracy and human/civil rights. Through education spreading, literacy rates and employment rates have also raised. All of this increases the government, political, and economic stability of the colonies.
-While it is true that empires increased the development of Asia, Africa, North America, etc. during colonization; with the expansion of globalization modernization empires are no longer necessary. Empires cause more harm than help as countries rise in development and all arable land is colonized. Empires cause a decrease in sovereignty and cultural diversity. Also due to the nationalism of the empire, the empire would often act in their best interest regardless of what that means for the colonies. This can lead to economic instability, prejudice, and a hierarchy in the colony. To prevent this the world should denounce empires.

Christina Bae

~~~~
A. Discuss the impact of colonial rule in Africa and Asia with reference to THREE characteristics.
Ans: Three characteristics I caught while I was reading the article about the impact of colonial rule in Africa and Asia was one, changing the lives of the people forever. Before any powerful countries/empires interfered into the lives of the people, majority of these individuals had an established system and way of living. When these countries were conquered, the whole fundament of the colonies were changed economically, politically, socially, and even culturally. Agriculture changed some of those landscapes, and different methods of ruling were established as well. Another change was religion. In the empire’s perspective, the beliefs of the “savages” were intolerable to them, so sending missionaries, for example, could help convert them in order to become better members of their society. Even education of these people could help them as well. Lastly, resources. Empires take time, effort, and money. And in order to become more powerful and well known, wealth is a key factor. With that being said, these Empires take these resources from their colonies, not to mention human labor as well.
B. Discuss if we should celebrate or denounce Empire building.
Ans: There are events in history that always have good sides and bad sides to them.
It depends on the perspective of a person to decide that. If a person in prideful of their country, they will usually celebrate its past success. However, if it is too shameful to discuss, individuals will obviously denounce empire building.
I personally believe we should do neither. Celebrating a time in history where certain groups of people were oppressed, or mistakes were made is nothing to be proud of, however, we should not denounce it because there are lessons to be learned from that period of history. this should apply to Every Empire.
1) Discuss the impact of colonial rule in Africa and Asia with reference to THREE characteristics.
A: The most major, positive effect colonialism had on Africa was the modernization. When the British decided to colonize Africa, they took everything they knew with them. for a while that made Africa a very successful continent, with one of the successful countries being South Africa. They brought down weapons technology, medicine, and many helpful trinkets. Another positive effect colonialism had on Africa was the amount of protection it received while it was part of the British empire. When Africa was colonized by Britain, Britain did everything they could to protect every inch of Africa from possible invaders. So on top of all the technology they had at the time, Africa was also able to build a steady population and not risk being killed in war or invaded by neighboring continents. One bad effect that colonialism had on the continents was the fact that they didn't really teach the inhabitants anything while they were there. When the British empire fell, the countries within it were sitting ducks that were left for dead because the empire "babied" them. Also countries were more prone to threats while the empire was still intact, and because the empire couldn't have a massive military for every piece of their land some countries were sitting ducks from the start. Like India, the empire couldn't protect them so many people were murdered or became displaced as a result.
2) Discuss whether we should celebrate or denounce empire building.
A: I think we should denounce empire building because of all the potential threats and consequences it could possibly have. The main problem with empire building is the threat it poses to other countries when it gets to a certain size. When empires get so big, nothing will stand in the way of them expanding because they just have too much firepower. Then you risk monopolization and one empire running the entire globe. That could lead to the deaths of religions, cultures, and even races. Then we may not really have the ability to celebrate or denounce empire building. Another reason we should denounce empire building is because you put so many innocent people in danger during the process and you put even more in danger if the empire falls. Other countries will attack/invade land simply because it does not belong to them. it you build an empire and you have enemies of any kind, you immediately put a target on your back and everyone who lives within your empire's borders. People are likely to die in the crossfire because they don't realize how much danger they are in. Plus if the empire falls all of those people are now exposed to ruthless groups who want the land they live on at any cost. Then people will most definitely die or they will be used as slaves for whoever takes the land.
A. Discuss the impact of colonial rule in Africa and Asia with reference to THREE characteristics.
> Some impacts made from colonialism is the loss of culture, and the gain of technology. When Africa and Asia were colonized, the people doing so brought their practices with them, like forms of government, religion, and their more modern way of lives through newer technology. This changed the people there significantly, as people who learned these new ways did not go back to their old ways of life. The people in Africa and Asia adopted these practices as their own. But in the process of spreading this new lifestyle with Christianity, democracy, and technology, the cultures and people groups have been negatively affected. When Asia and Africa were first colonized, there was no regard for already made areas and borders, instead the land was divided for each country coming to claim it. This divided people and destroyed cultures, as people with different cultures were viewed as people of lower value. Yes, this helped countries advance one the colonizers left them, but at the risk of wiping out practices forever.
B. Discuss if we should celebrate or denounce empire building?
> Of course it all depends on the location and situation. If a state is trying to build its empire on land that is not necessarily claimed, but has a vast amount of people on it, then the culture should not be wiped out and replaced, as it was before in Africa and Asia. Of course, times in history where this has happened should not be announced or forgotten, as we must learn about past mistakes so they will never be repeated.
A.Discuss the impact of colonial rule in Africa and Asia with reference to THREE characteristics.
Three characteristics I found while reading the article was the suppression of the colonies citizens, resource pilgaring, and diminishing of their culture. Firstly, their people in these colonies were treated extremely unfairly. In bengal during WWI there was massive shortages in food because of the short sighted british government trying to feed the british troops. They killed four million people and continued to insult them by calling their religion “beastly” and saying the famine was their fault. What kind of colony is this when they cant see you past their own problems? Next, Resource pilgaring was a major problem in colonies by taking away their resources your taking away a development method and their future livelihood. For example, in british colonies they took away what was meaningful in the colonies economy and made it their own. Lastly, the diminishing of culture in some colonies is very worrying because when we see this it will as we know become no longer a mitch match of culture but a gray common expanse of culture. Yet in some countries like turkey they protect some of their smaller ethnicities and religions and protect them. This shows how their is a diminish of culture but some are preserved in colonies. Furthermore, colonies have the characteristics of suppression of citizens, resource stealing and culture killing.
B.Discuss if we should celebrate or denounce Empire building.
We should denounce empire building because it causes wars and expansion to sedate greed. In empires like the once great ottoman empire they rose quickly through conquering but still the empire drifted away. With expansion in the world empires use conflict to their advantage. Though there is still advantages like implanted buildings and roads but in the end your being suppressed by an empire. Former countries turned empire can support this for example countries in africa they should have been left to develop on their own except for the occasional aid of countries who have in mind the countries in africa's best interest. In conclusion, empires bring about unneeded change to countries and repress them culturally and politically.
A. Colonial rule in Africa was both good and bad. It was good in the sense that European countries would come to the tribes and create a form of government and a better economy. Although they took their resources most of the time, the newly made colony would still get some resources out of it to better themselves. Colonial rule was bad because it changed the people in ways they wouldn't want. Colonial rule has created a caste system before in which one ethnic or culture group would be thought of as better than another, and that group would be upper class. Meanwhile, the other ethnic group would be thought of as trash or untouchables. Systems like this ruined their establishment of peace they had already had. Another bad thing of colonialism is changing the religion of the Africans. The Africans would have their own religion and then the Europeans would come in and bring missionaries to convert them to the Europeans' religion instead.
B. Colonial Empire building can be both celebrated and denounced. It can be celebrated because it occasionally helps the people out with creating a better country, but it can be denounced because it changes the people in ways they don't want to be changed as said in answer "A".
1) Discuss the impact of colonial rule in Africa and Asia with reference to THREE characteristics.
A: As I read the article pertaining to the impact of colonial rule, one characteristic I understood was how colonialism changes peoples mindsets. When nations or empires begin to colonize a country, they disregard that the previous residents of the country already have a culture they do not want interfered with. For example, when a country is colonized, significant areas of their culture are replaced with Western values and ideals. Another characteristic I observed, was that as a country is colonized, modernization increases in the country. Powerful nations, bring new technology, and new political ideals that turn colonized countries modern. For example, when countries are colonized by Britain, they bring in the idea of Democracy, and other Western mindsets that cause modernization. Lastly, when countries colonize other states, they mostly force their religious values onto them. Most colonizers believe that if the country that they colonize does not share the same religion as them, then there is no unity. Therefore, the colonizing country sends out missionaries, or acts in forceful ways, in order to convert them.
2) Discuss if we should celebrate or denounce Empire building.
Ans: In my opinion, and based on the article 'Empire State of Mind', we should denounce empires, due to previous empires being such sore spots in history. In the past, empires were a glorified concept due to them bringing colonization, and causing boosts in countries economies. However, we are now past that period in time, and denouncing empires is now the best thing to do for our nations. Most countries now have stable governments, and do not need colonization from empires. Also, there is a limited amount of nations that are still under empires, so therefore why not denounce empires all together. Empires were the cause of multiple deaths, due to concentration camps, uprisings, violence, and famine. Those are not factors in history that we should celebrate, they can be acknowledged so that we can learn from the past, but the only logical step to take with Empires, is to denounce them.
A. Discuss the impact of colonial rule in Africa and Asia with references to THREE characteristics.
Well, colonial rule in Africa and Asia has had a big impact. Through colonization, some places in Africa and Asia have modernized. which lead them to have more trade partners among other countries. But, sometimes it had a cost to come with these implications. For instance, as one of the articles has said, some of these lands had their natives forced out of their homes, they pillaged the land of others for themselves. The British empire could be an example of that.
Another impact could be that colonialism is that it can provide stability, and create communications. All these things allow making trade easier. And could also lead to a better economy for a said country economy, government, and infrastructure.
Lastly, another impact could possibly be the change that affects other due to ethnic and cultural problems. Colonialism can cause more tension (if not already some) between other ethnic groups. For instance, the fight between the Palestinians and Jews over the land. With colonialism, there is borders and boundaries to follow. Lines would get drawn when not needed. And this causes some tension with almost everyone in said state or country.
B. Discuss if we should celebrate or denounce empire building.I believe that we should most countries around the world might have faced colonialism, but not all bad things have come from it. Lots of countries have become prosperous from colonialism, while others suffer because of the things empire forces upon the people. But there seems to be some kind of Cons to equal the Pros. So it's a fairly hard case, but I would choose to celebrate empire building. Mainly for the benefits, a country can gain.
A) the effects of colonialism in Asia and Africa can be shown in several characteristics, including but not limited to these three. One of the ways European colonizers affected Asian Africa was through culture, or rather the changing of it. When colonizers arrived they had little concern for the way of life of the people living there, instead they enforced their own beliefs and practices. Native beliefs were replaced with Christianity, and existing forms of government were being replaced by European ones. Another effect could be resource pillaging. European countries would often take away necessary resources from the native people, affecting their lives. This was in pursuit of one of the 3 G's, gold God and Glory. With little concern for the natives, colonizers stole resources from them to further their empire. Lastly, the introduction of modern infrastructure. The involvement of Europe has introduced infrastructure for Gathering the resources, which remained long after Europe has left Asia and Africa.
B) A lot of countries have been colonized, and it is apparent that not all bad things come of it. Although colonization has it's pros and cons in the end it introduces the rest of the world to mostly undeveloped civilizations and many countries have benefited from this. Without European colonization, who knows where we would be today? For that we should celebrate colonization, and all it has brought us in the end.
1. In Africa and in Asia, while they were exploited by Europeans for resources, they also established infrastructure, trade routes, and most importantly gave technology to these colonies of theirs. They developed them technological and physically with the building of cities and ports and provided them with modern medicine that helped save many lives. Colonialism also protected minorities and established a strong and stable government that mostly provided education to some of the natives.
B- Empire building should be denounced because most empires had times where they oppressed their people and turned into autocratic states. While empires have a vast amount of resources available to them to protect themselves, they can also use those resources to conquer more people and begin expanding their influence like the Soviet Union.
Discuss colonial rule in Africa and Asia with reference to three characteristics.
During the colonial rule of Africa and Asia the colonizers brought new aspects to the natives of the land. Some of these aspects could benefit these continents like having protection for an ethnicity which is what the Ottoman Empire afforded the Jews of Mesopotamia. Although that is a benefit, when Britain took over the area where the Ottoman Empire used to be they did not care to protect the Jewish ethnicity from the majority of the Arab ethnicity that were showing conflict between the two. Colonial rule also made the tribes change their religions in some cases because the colonizers thought that the religions that were already set up did not make sense and we're created by a "savages" mind. A third change to the characteristics in Africa and Asia is the use of their resources by the people who colonized them. As the colonials took the resources for their own personal use, while this made the materials scarce for the people who were already using them.
Discuss if we should celebrate or denounce Empire building.
I think we should not celebrate or denounce any Empire building because some empires might be seen by certain groups as helpful to the environment and the tribes by allowing them to thrive individually but with protection from the outside forces. While on the other hand you have colonizers that pillage and oppress tribes and then they try to change their culture into what fits the standards of the colonizers. They also force different religions onto the tribes which can cause the original religion of the tribe to die off.
A. Prior to European colonization, the people of said lands had evolved their own forms of government differing from their colonizers. The difference caused the invading states to change the core values of socioeconomics of their colonies. Tribal areas had leaderships changed from elders to monarch appointed governors. Subsistence farming began to mimic those seen in western Europe. Animist religions were wiped away as missionaries converted the locales to Christianity. Resources unknown to the local people were stripped away as Europe began trade and export of the raw materials.
B. I hold a central viewpoint of the celebration of Empire building. Although people were once oppressed by such empires, their sovereignty taken, and their land changed, Empires have also brought great development. The globalization and modernization needed to advance the people as a whole spanned from the very empires that some debate to denounce. Without empires, suffering may have been lessened for certain demographics, but the population as a whole would slowly suffer due to opposing new values from neighboring states and lessened global development. Few countries that would have the ability to develop would then transform into the very empires that were trying to be prevented from creation.
A. The three characteristics of the impacts of colonialism include peace, dependence, and protection. In the article, the author says that where other countries did not intervene in Africa, there is less peace. Colonialism also creates dependence on another country because they don't have their own true country. The last characteristic I saw was protection. Colonialism can form bonds between countries, so when those countries are in danger, they can be protected by their new ally.
B. Empire building should be celebrated. If Great Britain had never come to America, the U.S. would never have become the strong country it now is. Empire building helped to create countries with government and organization. It spread democracy which gave freedom to the people. Without empire building, we would not be the same.
A. Colonial rule in Asia and Africa had both positive and negative effects. A negative is when the countries in these continents were finally getting a sense of self rule but the colonial powers came in and got rid of the system that they were creating, to add their own. This grouped different ethnicities and religions together which contributes to the violence we see in Africa today. Also when the colonial powers had Africa and Asia under their control, the countries were used as a way to get money. All the work that was being done and all the money went to the colonial powers. A positive thing about colonial rule is that it helped the countries get a better sense of government. As we can see today Asia paid close attention to how the colonial powers ruled.
B) Empire building can be seen as a act to celebrate because it can create a strong unity amongst the countries it contains, but it also can be denounced because it can cause the people to change their lifestyle.
