The besieged </strong><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company"><strong>Company</strong></a><strong> forces and civilians in Cawnpore (now </strong><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanpur"><strong>Kanpur</strong></a><strong>) were unprepared for an extended siege and surrendered to rebel forces under </strong><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nana_Sahib"><strong>Nana Sahib</strong></a><strong>, in return for a safe passage to </strong><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allahabad"><strong>Allahabad</strong></a><strong>. However, their evacuation from Cawnpore turned into a massacre, and most of the men were killed. As an </strong><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honourable_East_India_Company"><strong>East India Company</strong></a><strong> rescue force from Allahabad approached Cawnpore, 120 British women and children captured by the </strong><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sepoy"><strong>Sepoy</strong></a><strong> forces were killed in what came to be known as the Bibighar Massacre, their remains being thrown down a nearby well in an attempt to hide the evidence. Following the recapture of Cawnpore and the discovery of the massacre, the angry Company forces engaged in widespread retaliation against captured rebel soldiers and local civilians.</strong></div>]]></description>

The Rani escaped in the night with her son, surrounded by guards. The escort included the warriors Khuda Bakhsh Basharat Ali (commandant), Gulam Gaus Khan, Dost Khan, Lala Bhau Bakshi, Moti Bai, Sunder-Mundar, Kashi Bai, Deewan Raghunath Singh and Deewan Jawahar Singh. She decamped to </strong><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalpi"><strong>Kalpi</strong></a><strong> with a few guards, where she joined additional rebel forces, including Tatya Tope. They occupied the town of Kalpi and prepared to defend it. On 22 May British forces attacked Kalpi; the forces were commanded by the Rani herself and were again defeated.</strong></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><strong>End of company rule:</strong> the great uprising of 1857 was an important landmark in the history of modern India.<ul><li>The revolt marked the end of the East India Company’s rule in India.</li></ul></li><li><strong>Direct rule of the British Crown:</strong> India now came under the direct rule of the British Crown.<ul><li>This was announced by Lord Canning at a <strong>Durbar in Allahabad</strong> in a proclamation issued on 1 November 1858 in the name of the Queen.</li><li>The Indian administration was taken over by Queen Victoria, which, in effect, meant the British Parliament.</li><li>The India office was created to handle the governance and the administration of the country.</li></ul></li><li><strong>Religious tolerance:</strong> it was promised and due attention was paid to the customs and traditions of India.</li><li><strong>Administrative change:</strong> the Governor General’s office was replaced by that of the Viceroy.<ul><li>The rights of Indian rulers were recognised.</li><li>The Doctrine of Lapse was abolished.</li><li>The right to adopt sons as legal heirs was accepted.</li></ul></li><li><strong>Military reorganisation:</strong> the ratio of British officers to Indian soldiers increased but the armoury remained in the hands of the English.
