“ I NEED A BREAK” 

In light of the situation- I’m sure our kiddos will display some frustration because of the change in routine. This is a tool consistently used in the classroom, I hope this helps. 

FYI: Sometimes our kiddos need a break. This looks different for each individual, but one thing that is consistent is when we see a kiddo becoming frustrated-we simply model “I need a break,” and/or show them the visual. Remember all of our kiddos are at different stages of learning this, some can independently tell us and some require you to model for them. A break simply means “no demands” are placed, this may look like a short walk or sitting in a quiet area.

  1. Gain their attention to sit down and make eye contact with you
  2. Let them pick out a book of interest
  3. Label items as your read (e.g. point to, where’s the...).
  4. Have students turn the pages
  5. Ask questions to recall memory "how many ducks are left?"
  6. Ask then to imitate a movement, silly face or sound (e.g. moving arms round and round for the wheels on the bus song) 
  7. Ask them action/verbs "what is the boy doing?"

I tried this for myself and it is super easy to make! Mix in food coloring with the oil before adding to the flour to make colored moon sand!
