This fictional character is immune to the bacteria that has killed off all of society. Since he is the only alive and uninfected person left, he takes matters into his own hands and is forced to become self reliant to find a cure to this epidemic. Neville expresses attributes of survival, independence, he does not conform to the tragedy around him, he fights, he uses his knowledge and power to survive, and instead of giving up he tries to find a remedy to stop the apocalypse. Although, Neville is somewhat forced to be self reliant since he is the only regular human remaining, instead of rolling over he takes on the responsibility and fights with no one besides himself. This character relates to the ideas in the text titled, "Self-Reliance", The power Dr.Neville has, "is new in nature.." yet he doesn't give up, he takes on the challenge. He doesn't find a way to die along with the rest of the population he chooses to, "advance and advance on Chaos and the Dark." He also proves that he is a man by not conforming to tragedy around him, "Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist." These song lyrics are parallel to the text in the similarity that not conforming to bad things that have happened to you and by accepting bad things that have happened in your life allow you to grow as a person and become self reliant. The author states, "must accept in the highest mind the same transcendent destiny.." , "Accept the place the divine Providence has found for you... the connection of events.", and, "Whoso would be a man (or woman) must be a nonconformist." All of these quotes relate to the song in the way that through heartbreak and pain, the singer has not let it effect her negatively, she learned to make herself happy, grew as a person, and was benefitted by the situation, she is a survivor.

"Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo. and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh." This quote is an example of how Emerson uses logos to back his claim and idea about how some of the greatest people to ever live were misunderstood. Anyone who has a bit of historical knowledge can connect these ideas and establish it as a credible piece of evidence, this enhances Emerson's piece and makes his ideas more concrete. Emerson has written things throughout his piece that somewhat serves as advice to the reader, such as, "Trust thyself", and "...imitation is suicide..." These are just two of many instances in which the author states pieces of advice to the reader, this creates his appeal to ethos. By providing the reader with advice, the author is able to establish himself as a person with knowledge and experience, and gives his piece the credibility it needs for the reader to insinuate that the author is speaking from experience. The author uses pathos to connect to his readers on a emotional level by using religious references. For example, "It may be safely trusted as proportionate and of good issues, so it be faithfully imparted, but God will not have his work made manifest by cowards." This quote is basically saying to be a man of God you must not be a coward, you have to be brave and possess the qualities that a self reliant person has.
