Rhymes - Jack and Jill

The children learnt the nursery rhyme 'Jack and Jill'. They sang the song with actions, they learnt the meaning of unfamiliar words such as 'pail' and 'caper' and they acted it out in small groups in the garden using props. Finally, they sang the rhyme again and listened out for any rhyming words they could find. Lots of fun was had!

At home: Please enjoy singing the rhyme at home with your child and helping them spot any rhyming words.

Making a Wish...

In theme with the rhyme 'Jack and Jill' the children also looked at different sources of water for people around the world. We discussed how some people, just like Jack and Jill, have to fetch water from outside. Finally we looked at wishing wells and we made our own one in class. The children made a wish and threw their dirham into the 'well'.

Literacy - Hooray For Fish

In Literacy we shared the story of 'Hooray For Fish' by Lucy Cousins. The children enjoyed looking at all the different types of fish and discussing the different sizes, shapes, colours and patterns they could see. They thought about their favourite fish and will begin painting it next week to make a very colourful class display.

Role Play - Laundry

To link with the theme of 'Water', we set up a laundrette outside. The children enjoyed scrubbing clothes, squeezing the water out and hanging them out to dry using pegs for increased fine motor control.

At home: Could your child help with the laundry? Perhaps they could help to sort and pair the socks when they are dry.

Science- Floating and Sinking

In Science the children have been experimenting with the concept of floating and sinking. In small groups, they each examined different every day items and materials such a metal coin, a plastic straw and a rubber duck. The children first predicted whether each item would float or sink and then tested their idea. It was very exciting!

At home: Fill up any clear plastic container with water. Then choose a few items for your child to test. First discuss the meaning of floating and sinking and ask them whether they believe their item will remain at the top of the water and float or sink to the bottom. Can they think of a reason why their item might float or sink?

Fine motor skills - inside water play

We had lots of fun transferring water from one container to another using small spoons. It is more difficult than it looks but lots of fun and easy to complete at home.

Physical Development - Outside Water Play

The children played various water games which included filling, carrying and pouring water in teams. We all had lots of fun and had to concentrate very hard to keep all the water in our buckets!

At home: this game can easily be replicated at home using two buckets and a large basin.

Rhymes- Row, Row, Row your Boat

This week we have enjoyed learning the rhyme 'Row, Row, Row your Boat'. We made a human boat by getting into pairs and pretending to row along to the song. We also had lots of helpers modelling using real oars at the front of the class.

Expressive Arts - Rainmakers

The children designed and decorated old kitchen roll holders. Then we put aluminium foil and rice inside and covered the ends to create our very own rainmakers!

Expressive Arts - Ice Cube Painting

First we talked about how the ice felt. Then we chose our own special coloured powder and mixed the ice with the powder. We watched the colours change as they mixed and discussed how the ice melted as it got smaller. We got very messy and had lots of fun and very interesting discussions about texture, size and colour!
