The IoT is a network of physical connected devices, like vehicles or home appliances, that enable these ‘things’ to connect and exchange data.
“Smartness” is not just about installing digital interfaces or streamlining city operations. It is also about using technology and data purposefully to make better decisions and deliver a better quality of life.
Connectivity and Integrity is crucial - relies on a robust network system.

The presentation on ChiilOut Hubs really inspired me to think more deeply about the experience of people in public spaces. In particular, how can we design a space that is interactive and can bring feelings of comfort and safety for people without compromising its functionality. Hearing June's observations on her daughter's interaction with a space spurred ideas on a playful yet practical space for children. Keeping it relevant to the current context, I quickly sketched these hand washing stations/fountains to encourage better hygiene practices at children's playgrounds.

After receiving feedback on my proposed concepts, I was able to evaluate the practicality of each designs and select one to progress forward with. Although, I liked the uniqueness of the public seating concept and its purpose in keep a dining space 'neat' the pivoting seats have a few safety and mechanical issues to be addressed.

Whilst the hand washing fountains looked interesting in form and would be practical in the current context it was suggested that I should seek to cater for the wider public to create more impact. However, this would take away the 'playful' and experimental forms of my initial concepts which aimed to incite a sense of wonder and curiosity in children. Thus, I decided to progress forward with my bus stop concepts and delve deeper into the Smarter Hobust Bus Shelter challenge. I was encouraged to further explore the innovative ideas behind these initial concepts, particularly, how to enhance the daily commute and turn it into a more informative and personalised experience.

+ A fun and inclusive environment. Passengers are prompted to do an activity which can be shared and displayed on a digital screen. This provides a platform for the community to connect & personalise their local bus stop.

A game - QR Code takes user to a game app with puzzle tiles varying in colours. The app displays prompt statements eg. what colour do you associate today's weather with? These coloured tiles are then displayed on the screen as a communal art piece.
Or sharing a personal story eg. the Humans of NY??

With the puzzle game app, passengers can drag tiles from their phone screen to the bus stop screen.

Uses current prepaid travel card to track number of passengers each bus can take and display this at the shelter.
Smart sensors collect data on travel patterns in the area
and change lighting intensity accordingly - only a specific section of the shelter lights up.
Environmental sensors track temperature and humidity levels - data displayed on screen and warns people to spread out.
E-ink enabled system map. E Ink displays enable schedules and service alerts that can be displayed clearly and efficiently with the readability of paper (less power consumption than screen)
Solar powered technology - design of roofing must maximise use of sun light.

A SMART CITY OR A LANDSCAPE OF SMART JUNK?

As cities become smart they need more and more — street lamps, public furniture, signboards — to integrate sensors, screens, batteries and processors. These and software systems are short-lived and require constant upgrade. Adding technology to products that didn’t have this in the past may shortens their life-span and makes servicing, warranties and support contracts more complex and unreliable.
In Barcelona, many of the gadgets that made it one of the world’s smartest cities no longer work properly. The smart streetlights on the Passatge de Mas de Roda, which were put in place in 2011 to improve energy efficiency by detecting human movement, noise and climatic conditions, later fell into disrepair.

Through further analysis of the Smarter Hobart design brief, I was able to build a moodboard that reflects key themes and issues the challenge seek to address. As concept continues to develop, I aim to reimagine the way we experience our urban landscape and transform the daily commute into a playful, immersive and personalised experience. From experimental forms inspired by nature to a more an arrangement of geometric shapes inspired by modern architecture, the design continued to evolve in each iteration. Whilst experimenting with different forms and structure I also researched into Iot sensors and smart technology that would be useful and robust to incorporate into the shelter. With little knowledge about IoT technology and their functionality in public spaces, I delve into my iniital research with a clouded mind and no clear direction on how to approach this brief and what to design. However, seeing existing examples of smart public furniture and infrastructure broadened my perspective on the usefulness and relevance of IoT and smart technology. My research has also inspired ideas creating public spaces that are interactive and fun yet functional, robust and socially inclusive.
