We know that students' minds differ from each other. As they learn how to read and write the knowledge will build for further learning as they get older.

Your child will not just be reading tons of books but building an understanding of each book they read. I will be exploring what types of books they enjoy to read, seeing if they are able to read independently, and helping them with reading when needed. We will not be only reading but writing too. They will learn to look at their own writing and see if they need to change anything, with guidance from myself.

Every student differs and makes their own decisions with what a the story they read means to them. Children will use their home life to relate to stories that they read or write.

Students will learn how to finish their reading or writing and what to do after they finish. It is important for students to be allowed time to brainstorm ideas to make sure they understand the activity being taught. Students will learn how to use small ideas to form bigger ideas for reading and writing.

In our classroom, we have a wide variety of learners, with many different strengths and goals. My goal as your son/daughter's teacher is to build on their strengths and make them the best readers and writers that they can possibly be! In our classroom, we are fixed on the idea of creating an environment that involves many components of a balanced literacy program. We have a wide variety of reading and writing activities that help to build literacy growth every single day. We will focus equally on the components of reading, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, writing, literature, phonics and a few others throughout this school year. Our goal by the end of the year is to have all students sufficient in all/many content areas. Majority of what your child learns in my classroom will relate to their everyday living. Our curriculum will consists of topics that are true/real to their lives in which they live. There will also be topics that they may not be very familiar with, but we will build on their funds of knowledge to try an develop a familiarity with new, unknown topics. In doing so, your child will grow as a person and a learner.

We will reach all literacy components through five levels of scaffolding.
Modeled Reading/Writing: This begins with me. I will model to my students how good readers fluently read and thinking aloud during my writing pieces to express how writers may think.
Shared Reading/Writing: Students and I will read books together. Along with creating writing samples together as a large or small group.
Interactive Reading/Writing: Both my students and I will take turns during instructional reading and create text, taking turns writing.
Guided Reading/Writing: I will teach reading lessons to small, homegenous groups and also work on wrting strategies and skills.
Independent Reading/Writing: Students will self select independent reading books and write stories indpendentlty, using the writing process that has been taught.

Above are just a few ways of how your child and their learning style, will be reached in our classroom. There will many more activities throughout the year to build on the idea of a balanced literacy program in our classroom.
