         <title>Social Work Movement by Jane Addams - Kayla &amp; Keily</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Who - Jane Addams was a social worker and activist. She’s known for funding Hull House in Chicago and advocated for social justice and women's rights.</p><p>What - She led the social work movement in the last 19th and 20th centuries, focusing on poverty, education, and community development.</p><p>Where - In Chicago, but extended across the US.&nbsp;</p><p>When - Her work began in the late 1800s with Hull House opening in 1889 to 1935.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>Cause: The social work movement, led by Jane, was caused by industrialization, urban poverty, mass immigration, child labor, and the lack of social services.</p><p><br></p><p>Effect: Jane Addams had a major impact on women's rights by advocating for women's suffrage, leading key organizations, and promoting education and employment opportunities for women. She helped to secure the right to vote And used her platform to write and speak about gender equality.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Department of Labor (1913)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Who:</strong> The owners of the new factories in the city were treating their workers poorly. The law that enacted the DOL was signed by President William H. Taft.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>What:</strong> The department of labor union promotes and develops the welfare of working people, to improve their working conditions, and to advance their opportunities for profitable employment.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Cause:</strong> The department of Labor was created to address labor issues and improve working conditions in the U.S.During the late 19th to early 20th century the country had a lot of industrial growth which caused workers to work in harsh conditions, low wages, and long work days.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Effect:</strong> After 1913, the Department of Labor continued to take on the responsibility of promoting the wellbeing of wage earners, improving working conditions and increasing opportunities to have a well paying job. The DOL (Department of Labor) also protected workers’ rights like controlling the wages of workers throughout America, working hours, and workplace safety.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Margaret Sanger  (Womens Rights)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Who</strong>: An American Birth control activist, nurse and writer. Best known for founding an organization that later became known as Planned&nbsp; parenthood&nbsp;</p><p><strong>What</strong>: Advocating for women's reproductive rights. She believed women should have the rights to their own body and decide whether or not they have children</p><p><strong>Where</strong>: Her activism took place mainly in the United States, focusing on New York where she opened the first birth control clinic in Brooklyn in 1916&nbsp;</p><p><strong>When&nbsp;</strong></p><p>1916: Opened the first birth control clinic in the U.S.</p><p>1921: Founded the American Birth Control League, later becoming Planned Parenthood</p><p>1936: helped legalize birth control for medical purposes through a court ruling</p><p>1950s - 1960s: supported research leading to the development of birth control pills.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Cause</strong></p><p>-Women had <strong>limited access to birth control</strong> and <strong>little control over their reproductive health</strong>.&nbsp;</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong>-Comstock Laws</strong> made it illegal to distribute birth control information.&nbsp;</p><p><br>-She saw <strong>women suffering</strong> from unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions as a nurse</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Effect</strong></p><p>-Increased access to Birth Control was given and reproductive rights had a profound and lasting impact on society.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>-Sanger challenged these laws, and was arrested but it helped lead to policy changes</p><p><br>-She founded Planned Parenthood, making birth control more accessible</p><p><br/></p><p>-Helped fund research, leading to the birth control in 1960</p>]]></description>

         <title>16th Amendment, 1913</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Who- Congress, President William Taft proposed it, and the Secretary of State Philander Knox ratified it. What- Gave the U.S. government the power to collect income taxes directly from the people.&nbsp;</p><p>When- Ratified on Feb 3rd, 1913, Where- Across the united States, Why- To fix a problem after a court case (1895) said income tax was illegal, and to help the government make money without just using tariffs.</p><p>_____________________________________________</p><p>C-The 1895 Supreme Court case (<em>Pollock v. Farmers’ Loan &amp; Trust Co.</em>) ruled that income tax was illegal because it wasn’t split among the states as the Constitution required. E- To fix this, the 16th Amendment was passed in 1913, allowing the government to collect income tax directly from individuals without any restrictions. This changed how the government raised money, making income tax a regular part of funding.</p>]]></description>

         <title>Pure Food and Drug Act 1906 and 1911 &amp; Meat Inspection Act  1906</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Who-</strong> Theodore Roosevelt was the president who passed these acts and Upton Sinclair ran "The Jungle" which led the meatpacking industry. The public highly disliked The Jungle for poor working conditions and disgusting meat packing which led to investigation</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>What-</strong> In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt passed The Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act in order to provide consumer protection and make sure all that the consumer buys is sanitary, labeled and inspected.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong> Cause: </strong></p><ul><li><p>Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" meat packing industry was highly disliked by the public and the meat pack was of terrible quality</p></li><li><p>Roosevelt saw this and began an investigation into the industry</p></li><li><p>Caused Meat Inspection Act which would allow the government to test and inspect food</p></li><li><p>Caused Pure Food and Drug Act which led to Ingredient Labels</p></li></ul><p><br/></p><p><strong>Effect:</strong></p><ul><li><p>The effect of the Meat Inspection act made strict requirements for meat packaging and gave the government right to check all meat’s to make it sanitary</p></li><li><p>Government could check the meat</p></li><li><p>Strict Requirement for meat packaging</p></li><li><p>Made the meat sanitary</p></li><li><p>The effect of the Pure Food and Drug act forbid the sale of misbranded or adulterated food and drugs in interstate commerce</p></li></ul>]]></description>
