Most insects develop from eggs outside of their mother's body. Mothers choose a place for their eggs and then abandons them. Few insects give birth to live young. Once insects have hatched, they start to feed and grow and often change shape. This is called metamorphosis. Some insects change a lot, and some only change a little.

Some insects help people while some harm them. Without bees and other insects, many flowers would not be pollinated, therefore many of the plants we grow wouldn't be able to produce food. Without predatory insects, there would be many more pests. Caterpillars, bugs and beetles attack our plants, and some locusts swarm fields and strip them bare.
