Bernice seems to be scared of her past, keeps bring it up and needs someone to rely on to get her out of that state of mind.
It seemed that Bernice relied on Avery for advice.

Piano is a symbol again like always.

Piano simultaneously symbolized past and identity. Maretha embraced her past and her own identity/culture when she plays the piano to vanish Sutter (the ghost of her past).
Maretha was scared to look at the past and Boy Willie wanted to conquer it by reversing it/getting rid of it/completely wants to move on
Boy Willie wants to help Berniece, doesn’t want to ignore the past. 

Power- Try to use physical power not appropriate to solve spiritual emotional issues. Search for identity separate of physical prowess
Boy Willie on dying and white man not being able to control him-- if physical power removed white man does not have power to take hope and identity.
More Power, Boy Willie tries to use physical power to overcome past/Sutter's ghost
