Avery to bless the piano.                                                  She hasn’t played the piano since her mom died. </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>He is trying to get her to rely on her faith and overcome her fear of playing the piano.<br>Bernice seems to be scared of her past, keeps bring it up and needs someone to rely on to get her out of that state of mind.<br>It seemed that Bernice relied on Avery for advice.<br>Interesting how Avery mixes African mysterious, Christianity and super superstition<br>Piano is a symbol again like always.&nbsp;<br><br><br><br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Piano- liminal symbol for family?? --- because so long as it's fate was uncertain or ignored the family could not move on . Piano is stuck, they are stuck<br>Piano simultaneously symbolized past and identity. Maretha embraced her past and her own identity/culture when she plays the piano to vanish Sutter (the ghost of her past).</div><div>Maretha was scared to look at the past and Boy Willie wanted to conquer it by reversing it/getting rid of it/completely wants to move on</div><div>Boy Willie wants to help Berniece, doesn’t want to ignore the past.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>Power- Try to use physical power not appropriate to solve spiritual emotional issues. Search for identity separate of physical prowess<br>Boy Willie on dying and white man not being able to control him-- if physical power removed white man does not have power to take hope and identity.<br>More Power, Boy Willie tries to use physical power to overcome past/Sutter's ghost<br><br>Willie boy vs Berniece on past<br>Willie Boy "You ain't even told her about the piano. Like that's something to be ashamed of"<br>"If you teach that girl that she living at the bottom of life, she's going to grow up and hate you"<br>Berniece</div><div>"I'm gonna teach her the truth. That's just where she's living.          <description><![CDATA[<div>In scene 4, Boy Willie and Lymon are in the process of trying to moving the piano and they are interrupted by the ghost of Sutter. It alludes to the idea that there are supernatural forces intervening to try and prevent the selling of the piano. Doaker then comes in and tells the pair that they should wait for Berniece to come home so they can get her permission.</div>]]></description>
