Propaganda is referred to when someone is trying to spread a view that they think everyone should follow. During the war Canada used this to get more people to enroll in the army. They started to put posters up to try and help promote enlistment and other sources of support for the army like donations. Women would also shame men who were in the country and not wearing a military uniform. They did this by pining white feathers on their clothing. By doing this they pushed men to go to war.

When WWI started no one thought it was going to last as long as it did. As soon as the government found out they would need to make weapons for the war they requisitioned close to 540 industrial facilities across the country (Paquet). By the end of the summer the goal was to have companies producing 40 000 - 50 000 shells per day. A lot of factories met this expectation

It also gave them the power to censor and suppress communication. They did this to help control transportation, trade, and manufacturing. This act was used to ban 253 publications, including 222 American, 164 foreign language, and 89 leftist publications (Smith). Some people were also interned for their political beliefs.

When the Military Service Act became a law many French Canadians were not happy. The Spanish flu came to Canada with troops returning from war and made its way across the entire country. Quebec, Labrador and first nations reserves were hit hard. It left many kids without parents and many families without their main provider. Businesses also got hit very hard because of lack of demand or having to close for a while.

Many women contributed to the war effort, when the men left lots of jobs became vacant and the women filled them. Women became involved in business agriculture and even started to work in factories. Another thing they helped with was the Canadian Patriotic Fund (CPF) that was created to reassure married soldiers leaving their families that they would be taken care of while they were gone.

Prohibition was the ban or moderation of drinking alcohol based on the belief that drinking was responsible for many of society's problems. The Canada temperance act of 1878 gave local governments the choice to ban the sale of alcohol. PEI was the first place to use this law in 1901. The rest of the country followed during the First World War. During this time Liquor could be produced and exported from Canada but not sold. Most of the provinces repealed this law in 1920
