Shakespeare choose the witches to open the play because so we can see how the play will look dark.

the stage direction is that the sounds are used very negative word like "thunder" also their voice is scary.

The effect on the audience is that it makes them have an negative emotion towards the witches.
Shakespeare choose the witches to open the play by because it will give us an idea what will come next in the poem by making the witches start with opening play with abab rhyme scheme.
I the 17th century the audience wouldn't react over dramatic because it was normal for witches to appear in plays considering it is the 17th century.
The witches are presented as being very clever because when they talk they don't think twice what they are saying. We can see this in the length of sentences in act 1 scene1.

In the scene there is a night full of strange voices mainly just heard by the Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
This scene happens just after Macbeth killed the king of Scotland and return to his house to inform his wife about it however as he came he did not left the daggers that he killed the king with what is accrual disgrace in eyes of his wife that he is infirm of purpose and he cannot do anything right. 
They hear the voices that are not real a side from knocking to their door but while it happen Macbeth is still unprepared to visit the visitors and in any circumstances listen what someone would tell him.  
Atmosphere in the scene is made to be a while of mystery as audience don't know if immediately the army of knights may enter to Macbeth house and see him as a murder covered in king's blood that makes a the most important feature dark unknown not scrutinised range of motion. 

Noises that are heard by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth  that appear in their heads prove the paranormal and psychical activities happening in their heads what makes a while of fear of someone watching them and want to enter and cross their planes. 
Macbeth is presented as white blooded afraid slightly bit psychically burnt very unresponsive and acting and reacting out of content being very childish crying laughing at once being completely out of his mind. 
Lady Macbeth is presented as a opposite very carful mindful passion and in the charge of situation rather domination over Macbeth.

Witches are presented in a way of very unpleasant in sacred pieces of clothes wearied around them what significance that they are only very poor weird human beings that can have mysterious impact on the scenes through out the play.
