Week 2 assignment: Imagine a school by Teach For All

You have explored classrooms in different contexts. Step back. Consider everything you saw and review your notes. Here's your prompt: 1. If you could design your own school from scratch, what would success look like (and who would you consult to determine success)? 2. What is the look, sound, and feel of the school on a typical day? 3. How would the community be reflected in your school? 4. What would the typical methods of teaching and learning be? Answer at least two of those questions and explain why for each. Indicate which questions (Q1, Q2, Q3, and/or Q4) you are answering in your responses. You may answer in any way you wish - drawing, writing, sharing a video or audio file. You may respond in any language you wish. You can add your response by clicking the pink plus at the bottom right hand side of the screen. Please be sure your response isn't blocking others'. You can answer briefly or go into detail - you decide what is best for your own learning and sharing!

Q1) In a school I would design from scratch, success would look like: a) students from all backgrounds/identities/socio-economic strata from the surrounding areas are attending this school and learning together harmoniously while being aware of their histories/identities/shared values b) students not only meet grade-level academic rigour (based on the national board) but also are able to critically engage + complete online content of their choice through MOOCs and other learning experiences c) students along with parents are learning together by identifying challenges in their communities, analysing their root causes and engaging with the right stakeholders in the system to change current reality (could be access to healthcare, infrastructure, water & sanitation - anything that students and parents collectively decide to solve)
Q2) A typical day would begin with heterogeneous groups of students coming together to meditate, share their expectations for the day, what they are looking forward to, what is holding them back and their one commitment to do better for that day. Then there would be a break for students to prep for the day or eat breakfast (community-sourced from parents) and then the day would begin with 45-minute classroom sessions. In these classrooms, students are not grouped by age but by mastery of content and in mixed groups, they engage first with direct teacher instruction followed by peer-led or self-led instruction. In subjects like English, History there will be equal focus on national curriculum and hyper-local histories and stories. The content will be diverse and representative. Technology is used to enhance practice where necessary and to improve accessibility where applicable. There are no rows of chairs and tables but seating arrangements in circles, floor-seating and other options for students most conducive to students who have differently-abled either physically or cognitively. There would be no scheduled breaks but students can step in and out as per their needs and food would be available in the corridors. In the latter half of the day, students will work along with teachers on group projects - performances, tinkering labs, sports etc. There will also be a rotating schedule for students to engage in service in the community. This would also be the time, if parents especially stay-at-home mothers want to come to brush up or learn some content, they can come to school to attend some of the learning spaces. A half hour before the day ends will be group reflection circles - to revisit the commitment from the morning, what was different, what was challenging and gratitude. Weekly there will be a parent-student time for working on community projects in small groups.
Q3) Community will be reflected in every aspect of the school - right from the art on the walls to the layout of the learning spaces. Acknowledging the diversity of the community and the history of the land. Parents contributing to the food in the school and getting compensated for it, parents having space to garden alongside their children, spaces for parents and teachers to collaborate on students' growth and aspirations, community service time, engagement with the local panchayats and district level officers

Two student guides show us micro plots of land on which they are cultivating different varieties of paddy

I would want to understand and learn about the strengths the community has and bring it into the way the students learn and grow - make it connect to their lives and their cultures. I think it's so important to see a school as a mirror to the community - how we treat our students in school is a mirror of how we treat them in society. I'd want to engage community members in being a part of the school and encouraging students to grow and become leaders in their own right.

1.) In terms of success, me as an outsider wouldn't be able to judge what success means to different schools. I feel like success needs to be defined by the stakeholders within the community. That being said, the process of obtaining indicators for success should be participatory. For example, students, parents, teachers, and community leaders should have a say in setting the community vision. Moreover, the indicators need to be set with an informed mindset as well. They need to take into the account of what is happening to the world around them. For example, the communities may want the kids to stay within the communities and tailor the curriculum to be practical. Yet, with that, the kids may lose the chances of getting into higher education if they want to. In that sense, awareness is important.

3.) I think the community should be present in deciding major directions of the school. They should have the same status as the teachers and can voice their opinions. Allowing the communities to participate will foster a long term relationship between schools and communities. The relationship should also be two-way; both can give and take.

Designing my school from the scratch would be a very thoughtful process. What I am about to write here is just my basic understanding of what my school would look like, which means there still chance for refining.

Q1: Success in my own school would be defined by the amount of community challenges that my students are aware about and the number of solutions they have been able to develop to solve those challenges. My students would be seen as leaders who are locally rooted and globally informed. They would be armed with the core skills such as critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, digital literacy, etc. My school would be at the forefront when it comes to community dialogue on progress and development.

Success in the school would also be measured through academic outcomes. All my students would be academically sound and would be intelligent enough to make sound decisions for their lives. My students would lead careers right from their time in school and would start working their way through it.

On the part of the teachers, we would have young people who undergo continuous professional development that would enable them carry out their duties as teachers and guidance properly.

Q2: The look, sound and feel of my school on a typical day would be summed up in this one statement: A high level culture of achievement. Every of my students would believe in themselves that they can succeed and this would be evident in how the school is run.

The school would have a morning session every day that aims at inspiring the students to success through speeches, role modelling, story telling, arts, etc. Every student have to share in our common belief that we are a team of solution providers.

There would be practical based learning in the classrooms and the students would get to carry out a lot of projects and experiments. There would be time for innovation and the curriculum would be planned in a way that the students are able to express themselves.

There would be reading prep time everyday where students get to travel the world by reading books and literature materials.

Q3: Community would be reflected in my school first through our curriculum. There would be priority for languages and history in my school. These subjects would be made major for every students and there would be termly projects carried out on them.

Also, we would hold community stakeholders meeting where we gather inputs from the community on how best we can deliver quality education. These meetings would feature cultural presentations by our students and also an education re-imagining session based on localized contexts.

1. How would you define success and who would you consult to determine success?
Based on my understanding success is and should be defined based on skills that will allow a student to harness his/her potential and that of his community. I think that for a student to be successful, he/she should have the knowledge, skills and mindsets to initiate change, solve problems and engage with the community. If I were to design a school from scratch, I would definitely move away from designing success based on quantitative measures. Rather, I would go towards measuring success based on how their learning of the subject matter could contribute to addressing a need in the community. For redefining success, I think it is necessary to consult the students themselves, the members of the community and definitely other stakeholders. It is important to listen to different perspectives and find a way to consider those perspectives when designing what student success means.

2./3. What is the look, sound, and feel of the school on a typical day? How would the community be reflected in your school?
I put these two questions together because I think that my ideal school day would be integrative of the community's beliefs and values. I imagine that the community and the school should have an integration in the way that students learn their lessons. One example is for the community to be resources for the students' learning. I remember one lesson that I witnessed, instead of reading history books and watching videos of the past war, the teacher invited elders in the community to share their experiences about the war. I recognize as well that it is important for the community's values to be reflected in the way that students are taught in school. Such that, if the community values timeliness for example and that it is crucial to the identity of the community, then school practices should also reflect that. Likewise, the school could also be a means of unlearning some beliefs that the community may have that could potentially be harmful. For example, health care is not valued in some communities but schools can be an avenue to correct misconceptions. In summary, I think what is important to me is that the schools and community share a common vision and that they use each other's strengths to overcome their areas of growth.

Q1: Success in my school would be: teams of students, mentors, teachers, staff, parents and other members of the local community working together to solve problems in their own community. Classes would be the time in which students equip themselves in order to be more effective in their community projects afterwards. School would be a place where students are taken out of their comfort zone and put in an environment that challenges their way of thinking; Even though they would often feel challenged, they would know they are in a safe environment in which they can explore who they are, make mistakes, test different hypothesis and learn new things about the world they are part of.

Q2: Before class it is noisy because of buzzing enthusiastic discussions. Everywhere there are different spots with room where you can sit, eat, chat, think, have a rest, reflect. These spaces are designed by teachers and students and they are very colourful and different. Teachers, other staff members, students, guests, parents (everyone is welcome) gather in different small groups. They discuss their progress in current projects they are working on together. Everybody is smiling and feeling comfortable.

Older students greet younger students and help them with their backpacks. The students then choose their classes according to what skills and knowledge they need in order to achieve the goals they have set for themselves until the end of the semester. Classes are long

(~1 hour), because everyone wants to immerse themselves in the subject matter and explore it deeply. In class students move freely to explore materials provided by the teacher or by peers; they ask questions and discuss issues together; they ask for help and use every minute and resource in the classroom effectively because they know what their goal is; They track their progress on the wall; what they have learnt today is like a small jigsaw puzzle piece that makes the picture look more finished. They leave the classroom satisfied because they know what they have learned and what they need to do at home, so that they take the most out of the next class. The breaks are also long so that people can communicate effectively.

I believe that a student must be autonomous to critically analyze reality and make decisions. He must think of himself as an agent of social change and as an active member of his community. He must be aware that individualism is not sustainable, it is useless to think ourselves as isolated subjects, but as members of communities that contain us, that help us but at the same time we must help. Promote reciprocal relationships of respect and commitment. Understanding as parts of a whole that must grow in an integral way. If any member of the community suffers, the rest is affected. If you are part of that minority that suffers, you must fight to defend your rights; If you are not part of that minority that suffers, you must understand that its suffering affects everyone. You must understand that your privileges are often based on losses of others, and you must work to try to balance them.
The school must train students under this perspective, only then will it be successful. Only then will it form critical citizens, committed to reality, defenders of democracy, human rights and inclusion. Only in this way will it shape critical thinkers, who will not stop at obstacles, who seek to solve problems, who set goals and fight to achieve them.
A typical day at school would involve rethinking all the small elements of school institutionality that historically have served as instruments of cultural domination and homogenization. From the bell ringing to the location of banks in a classroom are reflections of an educational model that seeks indoctrination, the training of factory workers to follow routines and obey orders. However, total anarchy is not good either if the foundations do not share a common spirit of respect and desire to learn. Collective norms of coexistence should be built and worked every day in respect to form inclusive and non-repressive routines.
I believe that work by projects would be a way to promote the autonomy of students and revalue the learning acquired in the classroom, to incorporate them into their daily lives and the benefit of their communities. This would involve rethinking the curricula, promoting cooperation between areas, courses and teachers. To blur the linearity and the stagnation of the current school curriculum. Encourage cooperation between students of different ages but with similar interests, for example.
Students should feel included regardless of their haircut, their aesthetics, their speech, their socioeconomic background, if they are a parents, etc. Therefore, spaces must be generated to contain children while their parents study, creating leisure spaces for students to spend some free time if they are saturated (this also requires constantly rethink teaching practices so that the classroom does not be a place they want to flee but where they want to be). There must be adults available to speak, advise. The teachers 'room should not be the teachers' lair between class hours, but a place in the school. Teachers must be present in the extra-classroom life of the students.
Communities must also be present in school life. To be able to contribute ideas and tell their needs to see how the school can intervene. Local knowledge must be valued in the classroom, must be part of the knowledge construction process. The school should be the place where the members of the community attend to request information, regardless of whether or not they are students. In peripheral and deprived areas like those in which many of us work, the School is the State in the territory. That is why I believe that political initiatives should include schools as spaces for promotion, information and assistance. And students and teachers must be active participants in these initiatives. Not in a political-partisan sense, but state. For example, what better to raise a community's awareness of an environmental problem than to develop school projects for diagnosis, analysis and broadcasting? What better way to train citizens to vote responsibly than to design citizenship projects where students can be not only students but also disseminators, where they can play an active role and make decisions and discuss about the community problems?
The methods of teaching and learning, then, also become diffuse. The students must be able to learn and teach. Teachers must be able to learn as well. The power relations in the classroom become more horizontal. Classes lose magistrocentrism and become more participatory, with more active dynamics such as workshops, laboratories, etc.

Q1. Success would be seeing all my students come everyday to class, watching them learn without any hesitation, success would be seeing every single parent at every parent teacher meeting, success would be that all my students graduate from high school, success would be seeing every single student that I get to teach fulfill their dreams. The best way that I would consult to determine success could be asking my own students what is success to them.
Q2. The sound would be kids laughing, shouting, counting, reading, because learning with fun is the best way to learn.
Q3. Parents would have to come once a week, at any time they prefer, students could approach their teacher without any hesitation or fear, they would be round tables once a month to hear teacher, administration, parents and students opinions.
Q4. The typical method would be teaching with examples, on the field, example if students have to learn about biology they could have the opportunity to experience on trips, labs, museums, it would be always on the field that in a classroom.

1. In my opinion, I think we can define "success" in many aspects. For me, success of many children means the children can live their lives by each individual's interests effectively, and they are able to extend the impact of what they are best to enhance others, social and community. The success does not mean "you win, and everything is end", but it means you know why to do something in your life first, then act in how to improve your life, and choose what tools or any sorts can be used to achieve your goals. However, you must think about your community too. If you can survive, but the community does not, it's not "success" anymore. Just only focus on leading your own identity and potential to enhance yourself, your family, friends and community. Good success will create another success, just pay it forward. The people I would like to consult with my students, parents, villagers and local teachers because I cannot lead anything to my classroom without knowing their needs. I would like to facilitate them in what they would like to enhance their community. However, I should provide good mindset to think of everything for myself and all people.

3. My school is like a "bi-cultural school", there are Buddhist and Islam in the same school. When there is an event, many of the community leaders both in Buddhist and Islam will come to school to give many suggestions and request any needs which they would their children to achieve. Many of my students always think of how to live with their family, and how to enhance their own community without working in the urban. Many of courses in my own school are reflected by the different culture in the same community. They love their community, but sometimes do not know how to use their awareness and agency to enhance their families and community. That is why, I collaborate with my friends to run the project "From Students to Leaders" to guide them how to inspect any needs in their community integrated with any potential they are able to use to destine their lives, then extend these impacts to the community.

1. How would you define success and who would you consult to determine success?

Success should be a collective one and not individual based in a school. It would happen when every child is aware and able to articulate and utilise their strengths and what they need for themselves and others in the community. This will enable them to complement each other in the community or class and be empowered individuals. Success will involve the combined efforts of people in the school and community. Only when everyone is involved, the school can be sustained and transformed. To determine it, each and every stakeholder involved must be consulted. Only when everyone’s opinion is heard success will be a long lasting one.

2. What would the typical methods of teaching and learning be?

The teaching methods would be application or project based involving hands on experience on the concepts taught. It should be in a way that it caters to all children in the class (differentiated instruction) keeping in mind their strengths and learning styles. The learning method would involve lot of collaboration in class which would strengthen the culture and value system in class. Assessing everyday learning through reflection or exit slips is necessary for both the teacher and the students. Curriculum and projects should b relevant to the children and their community to make them realize the connections between classroom learning and the world outside.

A school that is "successful" needs to be grounded in the reality of its community. Success must be based on what is important to the community on the whole. At the same time, the context of the community must be seen as existing within a larger context as well. Failing to zoom out will lead to tunnel-vision that will eventually be a disservice to the community. A measure of success can only be created by placing the community within a larger historical and geographical context. The first step is simply ensuring that students are aware of their reality within a larger context.

Typical methods of learning and teaching must be dialogical and collaborative. If they are not tied into the everyday needs of the students, they will be pointless, so they must also work around the reality of the community.

Thank you for this amazing task!
Actually I'm reflecting on the question "if I can launch a school what would it be like" for the whole two years and I already have a vision.
Q2 I imagine a school in the middle of a grassland may be growing seeds around to make our own pour and bread later. It must be a boarding school there students will spend all the time. The main goal is to teach them to reestablish the harmony between man and nature firstly on their own experience. Practices like meditation, walking, farming, cooking and others would help. After that I want them to set up a system of alternative energy electricity for the whole school, install solar panels for instance I want them to know how to do it by hands. Education for Sustainable Development program also will be on the top of the subjects.
Q3 After at least two years of experience I want my students to spread their knowledge to the community by any activities. We can make fairs, social movements calling to install solar panels and other, youtube channel, podcasts, leaflets, well everything that can help to spread the idea of being environmentally and socially conscious. So I imagine this like a circle if awareness expending around the school.

Nowadays I'm launching an online project for teens contributing to Sustainable Development Education goals, this is very demanding sector in Russia and many other countries. But later I wish to build such school and hopefully I can find other passionate leaders at the Summit so we can do it together for the service of peace.

However, students need to have the ability to navigate their own pathways and choices, with the understanding that what they can see as precedents are not the only possible routes.

What would the typical methods of teaching and learning be?
- Students will have access to (at least primary) education in their mother tongue
- Students will study a (societal) dominant + a foreign language, not with the aim of becoming a native speaker in that language (it's impossible), but being able to express their own identity in the dominant language in other to navigate the mainstream and have their voices heard
- Curriculum will be written specifically with the target cultural group as the audience in mind
- Learning is a lifelong human capability, something that is part of our life (rather than something that is just part of an institutionalised practice), thus being engaged with school needs to be framed in a relevant way so that it is seen as a need, that is comparable to the need to eat and drink

Q1:
Defining success would not be possible without understanding the real needs of the community. It should be co-operative process of asking and listening. Should we understand success mainly academically or rather more holistically? Do we want to work with the community until the students are ready continue their higher education or find a job? Or rather trying to provide the community with sort of a "pipeline" (e.g. Harlem Children's Zone), where community building goes hand in hand with social services and education from birth to college?

It will have to be consulted with various stakeholders as community is not usually represented by a single person or a group. The voices that should have been heard are voices of students, their parents, locals who, a mayor, local representatives etc .

Q3:
I imagine a school in a rural area, where the community is determined rather regionally than culturally or ethnically. A school, where the community consists of both- of citizens who live directly in the village as well as of citizens who live in settlements on the outskirts. The core idea would build upon what Maggie said in her story- on the school culture where students can contribute to their community. Therefore such a school will have to work as a hub somehow co-working with various local communities, institutions and stakeholders, such as kindergarten, Church, library, local NGOs, community centers etc. - opportunities where students could contribute and thus foster the community of the whole village/ area.

Carolina Rodríguez - Enseña Uruguay

How would you define success and who would you consult to determine success?

I believe there are a lot of indicators to consider in terms of success. I would divide them into two dimensions: cognitive and socio-affective (non-cognitive).

In terms of cognitive development, a student that is successful is the one that

- has basical knowledge that enables him or her to pursue whatever path or career he or she decides to

- is able to develop and apply projects using theorical concepts he/she learned in classroom, and to solve real problems using this concepts.

In terms of non-cognitive development, a student that is successful is the one that

- analyses national or global problems from a critical perspective

- recognizes who she/he is and what are her/his virtues and difficulties, and knows what to do with them

- is resilient, creative, innovative , empowered.

- is willing to become a leader in her/his community by identifying problems and work towards solutions.

(Of course there are other things that might be significant but these are the ones that came to mind today)

I would love to consult teachers from different educational systems (here in Uruguay for example there are public schools and private schools, technical schools, some that have mixed systems) about what is success for them, and also students from different systems too, and members of the community the is in. Maybe focus groups were this same question is asked, or ask what things they are being taught that they like and what things they would like to learn or are important that we are not giving attention to.

What is the look, sound, and feel of the school on a typical day?

I would like students to be happy to attend school, to enjoy their education. I would have them develop healthy relations with their peers and teachers. I would have tutors for every class, whose role would be to accompany the children more closely. I would love to feel that the general atmosphere is one of optimism, enjoyment and development.

I would try to create a strong institutional culture, creating spaces and activities for students to interact with others students different from the ones in their level, and also creating spaces for graduates, for them to continue to work with the children or the school. I would like to encourage teachers to develop projects between them and students, and for them to feel supported.

I would have extra curricular activities, for example workshops were children can develop their abilities and give back something to the communities, or classrooms personalized by every class, or debate groups, or leadership groups to develop abilities such as communication skills or self-awareness, or groups were children might go to do volunteer work.
I would love to hear students say that they feel at home in school.

How would the community be reflected in your school?

First, we might have the focus groups I mentioned earlier at different important points throughout the school year, for students, teachers and members of the community (parents for instance). We could evaluate what we are doing and change the approach.

Then, I believe that if one of the indicators of success is that students are able to identify problems in their communities and create solutions, they should practice this skill from an early age, therefore being a fundamental part of the school program. We should encourage them to go out and see the place where they live, who they are and what are their strenghts/virtues. What is their history? What is their role in the major narrative? What can I do to improve my community?

What would the typical methods of teaching and learning be?

I believe project based education would be very useful and effective. Children would learn, apart from cognitive habilities, other non cognitive ones such as creativity and problem-solving.
I also believe that creating habits in the classroom is very effective too: exit slips, weekly challenges for instance, metacognitive activities (what did I learn today and how).
And last but not least I think students should have an active role in their education, deciding which projects or workshops they might participate in, having class delegates that can talk with the principal about what the students want, engaging their families in their learning experience.

I loved imagining a school and I think that in the school i'm working in (and in Uruguay in general) there is a lot of room for improvement, specially in terms of community engagement and non cognitive skills.

1. How would you define success and who would you consult to determine success?

I believe this must be defined with the community, but not before they know what can be accomplished. I would consult schools of refference, ones which have values and a mission that involves community engagement. There are lots of really interesting experiences from different parts of the world to study and get in touch with that opens the possibility range and takes the imagined ever further.
Success must be a challenge, not something reachable as a simple task. It must make teachers, students and families reach their highest pottential, not only for them but for the whole community to become a better place for everyone. For this to be of interest of the whole community, there is a huge task to be made to develop “agency” and commitment with others by knowing who we are, where we come from, where are we going and why are we walking this or that way. I belive success will be accomplished only after students become aware of their power to be real changemakers and leaders to their families, neighbours, friends and community.

3. How would the community be reflected in your school?

Community is not only going to be reflected in the school, but the school is going to be inside the community, open and active for families and neighbours. I believe that to a school to be successful it must answer the needs of the people that live there. The best way to accomplish this is to open the school to the community, to enable the community to have an active role and empower them to bring the best of each of one of them to bring the community to its fullest.

4. What would the typical methods of teaching and learning be?

The school would have a PBL curriculum, where students have projects that integrate several subjects and enable them to develop skills for life as team-work, determination, critical-thinking, innovation and more. I believe this kind of education is what we need to encourage because it understands that students are have dreams, expectations and objectives. Students are children and teenagers that can be leaders that empower others too, so we need to push them to develop soft-skills as one of the most important part of their education to have the resources to reach their dreams and be able to make the best decisions in life.

For the PBL to be successful and reach the objectives, projects must be designed after knowing our students, it must be of their interest and it must challenge them to go further.

School from scratch!

Q1: Success will take the shape the student, their family and the community decide to give it. The goal is that the school give the tools to the students to define what they think success should mean, limited by their own context. This way they will take control of their lives.

Q2: School will be an adventure. Students will become explorers of the world and its different manifestations. They will have spaces to develop their own projects or challenges proposed by their guides (teachers). School will be exciting enough to sound like failed experiments, fatigue whispers, happiness laughs and astonishment screams, but it will also bring the calm of the nature when you want to relax o explore its beauty.

Q3: Community will be part of the school by allowing the people come and learn, teach and experiment. People from the community will dictate the course of the school and its culture will be impregnated in each space. There will be weeks where the students won’t come to school but they will have their learning in the same community, going and learning how to plant and harvest, how to deal with a costumer and the different opportunities that exist in it.

If you could design your own school from scratch, what would success look like (and who would you consult to determine success)?
-I would look the the community in which the school exists to create my definition of success. I'd ask them what their hopes and aspirations are for themselves and for the children who would be attending the school. Students will be the future leaders of the community, so I'd want to know more about the current assets and needs of the community. Then, we could work together to determine how to build students' skills and mindsets to prepare them to be the leaders their community needs.

4. What would the typical methods of teaching and learning be?
-I'm a huge fan of project-based learning. I'd push for more of a traditional academic schedule in the morning (structured class periods) with longer blocks of time in the afternoon for students to dive deeper into projects that would be meaningful for themselves and their community. Jacobo's materials provided some examples of the types of projects that I'd like students to be engaged with during this time.

Samuel Asma, Kotch pedagojik nan Anseye Pou Ayiti. An retou sosyete a ba li tout merit li. Konsa tou reyisist la ka vini sou plan politik kote moun sa vin yon bon prezidan, senatè, depite. Li ap bay bon rezilta nan fonksyon li okipe yo epi li fè sosyete fè avan. An retou sosyete rekonèt travay moun sa te fè nan pòs li a.
